Foreign direct investment as a signal
Koska, Onur A.; Long, Ngo Van ; Staehler, Frank (2018-02-01)
This paper models oligopolistic competition among potential multinational firms in an environment of firm heterogeneity, incomplete information on costs, and strategic interactions. We show that foreign direct investment is more likely if it can serve as a signal of productivity in an environment of incomplete information as firms would like to avoid sending a low productivity signal. Our model shows that this effect is strong enough such that foreign direct investment can be an optimal foreign entry mode e...
Spatial Agglomeration, Innovation Clustering and Firm Performances in Turkey
Taymaz, Erol; Ghali, Sofiane (Routledge, 2019-01-01)
This chapter investigates how firms’ productivity in Turkey is affected at spatial level by agglomeration of firms, clustering of innovation and localization of foreign direct investment (FDI). According to the Marshall theory, specialization economies increase the interaction between firms and workers, and speed up the process of innovation and growth, as firm agglomeration in the same sector produces positive externalities and facilitates the growth of all manufacturing units within it. FDI is found to be...
