This study conducted a holistic assessment on the traditional building culture of the Eastern Black Sea region by investigating the construction techniques, materials, and methods among building masters. For this purpose, by examining regional building construction techniques and the data from the literature research, traditional architecture was investigated in terms of both its tangible and intangible values. Additional data was obtained from a series of interviews with the builders, architectural drawings, and two documentaries: a 1986 documentary by Suha Arin titled Sisler Kovulunca, which focused on Eastern Black Sea traditional houses and a sample of building masters; and a 2005 documentary by the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation called Derin Kokler, which focused on traditional buildings of the Eastern Black Sea region. All the data was then evaluated in order to document the tangible and intangible values of the construction processes of the builders, thus revealing their practices and rules related to such work. Moreover, three-dimensional drawings related to the construction process of the Eastern Black Sea traditional architecture were prepared to highlight the implementation of the different techniques by the building masters, both on the building scale and the application details.

A study on the building techniques and materials in the late antique and byzantine fortifications in anatolia: Ancyra and Nicaea /
Yavuzatmaca, Mercan; Serin, Ufuk; Conservation of Cultural Heritage in Department of Architecture (2016)
This research aims to investigate building techniques and materials in the Late Antique and Byzantine fortifications of Anatolia through the selected case studies of Ancyra/Ankara and Nicaea/Iznik. The majority of Late Antique and Byzantine fortifications in Anatolia are distinguished by ashlar masonry, including quantities of spolia, with alternating courses of brick. The frequent appearance of brick, in combination with more-or-less regularly cut blocks or spolia, in the buildings and fortifications of An...
A review of zooplankton investigations of the Black Sea over the last decade
Kıdeyş, Ahmet Erkan; Shulman, G; Gordina, A; Bingel, F (2000-03-01)
Investigations performed in the last decade indicate that there have been important changes in the zooplankton composition and structure in the Black Sea. However, contrasting events taking place in different regions of the Black Sea indicate a non-uniform structure of its ecosystem.
An analysis of the thermal performance of METU staff housing units and calibratıon of their simulated model
Bağcı, Mediha Özlem; Elias Özkan, Soofia Tahira; Department of Architecture (2008)
The aim of this study was to investigate the thermal performance of residential units in the Middle East Technical University (METU) Campus, Ankara. The study was conducted on the unoccupied residential units to eliminate the occupant interventions. There were only three unoccupied residential units in the study period, hence sample was considered as randomly selected. Case study units were triplex row houses and all physical characteristics were identical apart from their orientations. The thermal performa...
A comparative study of the thermal performance of building materials
Elias Özkan, Soofia Tahira; Surmeli, Nesen; Yannas, Simos (2006-12-01)
This study focuses on the environmental performance of a selection of buildings in the typical Central Anatolian village of Şahmuratli in Turkey. The objective was to search for affordable and energy-efficient construction techniques suitable for rural settlements and incorporating traditional cultural values in a semi-arid upland region characterised by long severe winters and hot, dry summers. This was pursued by analysing temperature and humidity measurements within buildings constructed from a variety o...
