Active Control of Smart Fin Model for Aircraft Buffeting Load Alleviation Applications
Chen, Yong; Ulker, Fatma Demet; Nalbantoglu, Volkan; Wickramasinghe, Viresh; Zimcik, David; Yaman, Yavuz (2009-11-01)
Following the program to lest a hybrid actuation system for high-agility aircraft buffeting load alleviation oil the full-scale F/A-18 vertical fin structure, an investigation has been performed to understand the aerodynamic effects of high-speed vortical flows on the dynamic characteristics of vertical fin structures. Extensive wind-tunnel tests have been conducted on a scaled model fill integrated with piezoelectric actuators and accelerometers to measure file aft-tip vibration responses under various fre...
Non-local stabilization of nonlinear systems using switching manifolds
Banks, SP; Salamci, MU; McCaffrey, D (2000-02-01)
The stabilization of nonlinear systems is considered by reducing the problem to a lower dimensional switching manifold which is made globally attracting. The switching manifold is designed using the stable manifold of the unforced system. The technique is first developed in local case and then in the global situation of nonlinear vector fields on manifolds. The method generalizes the standard Lyapunov approach.
Crack identification for rigid pavements using unmanned aerial vehicles
Ersöz, Ahmet Bahaddin; Pekcan, Onur (2017-09-22)
Pavement condition assessment is an essential piece of modern pavement management systems as rehabilitation strategies are planned based upon its outcomes. For proper evaluation of existing pavements, they must be continuously and effectively monitored using practical means. Conventionally, truck-based pavement monitoring systems have been in-use in assessing the remaining life of in-service pavements. Although such systems produce accurate results, their use can be expensive and data processing can be time...
Design of a secondary packaging robotic system
Şahin, Hakan; Balkan, Raif Tuna; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2005)
The use of robotic systems in consumer goods industry has increased over recent years. However, food industry has not taken to the robotics technology with the same desire as in other industries due to technical and commercial reasons. Difficulties in matching human speed and flexibility, variable nature of food products, high production volume rates, lack of appropriate end-effectors, high initial investment rate of the so-called systems and low margins in food products are still blocking the range of use ...
Numerical Simulation of three Base Isolation Systems for Earthquake Protection of Structures
Dölen, Melik (null; 2003-10-10)
In a previous paper [1&2] a base isolation system was proposed for earthquake protection of structures. The system incorporates spherical supports for the base, a specially designed spring-cam system to keep the base rigidly supported under normal conditions and to allow it to move for the duration of the earthquake under the constraint of a spring with optimized stiffness characteristics. A high-rise structure was considered to investigate the feasibility of the concept. The simulation of the system respon...
