Following the program to lest a hybrid actuation system for high-agility aircraft buffeting load alleviation oil the full-scale F/A-18 vertical fin structure, an investigation has been performed to understand the aerodynamic effects of high-speed vortical flows on the dynamic characteristics of vertical fin structures. Extensive wind-tunnel tests have been conducted on a scaled model fill integrated with piezoelectric actuators and accelerometers to measure file aft-tip vibration responses under various freestream and vortical airflow conditions. Test results demonstrated that the airflow induced considerable lamping to the fill structure. which generally increased increased with airflow speed as well as the vertical fill angle of attack reactive to the airflow direction. Moreover. it was observed that at the angle of a attack of 10 deg, the high-speed airflow introduced large deflection to the smart fin structure and caused significant frequency shift to the vibration mode; the to nonlinear geometrical coupling of bending and torsional modes. These aerodynamic effects may adversely affect the performance and robustness of the closed-loop control laws developed based oil vertical fill dynamic model identified without considering the varying aerodynamic effects. To explore this problem, the structured singular values synthesis technique was adopted to develop robust control law using smart fill model identified without aerodynamic excitations and the aerodynamic effects oil the fill structure were assumed as smart fin parametric and dynamic uncertainties. The effectiveness and robust performance of the control law was demonstrated through extensive closed-loop wind-tunnel tests using various airflow conditions. This provided a verified control law design strategy for future flight tests or file full-scale aircraft buffeting load alleviation system.

DYNAMIC MODELING AND CONTROL OF AN ELECTROMECHANICAL CONTROL ACTUATION SYSTEM
Yerlikaya, Umit; Balkan, Raif Tuna (2017-10-13)
Electromechanical actuators are widely used in miscellaneous applications in engineering such as aircrafts, missiles, etc. due to their momentary overdrive capability, long-term storability, and low quiescent power/low maintenance characteristics. This work focuses on electromechanical control actuation systems (CAS) that are composed of a brushless direct current motor, ball screw, and lever mechanism. In this type of CAS, nonlinearity and asymmetry occur due to the lever mechanism itself, saturation limit...
Aerodynamic modeling and parameter estimation of a quadrotor helicopter
Kaya, Derya; Kutay, Ali Türker (2014-01-01)
This study focuses on aerodynamic modeling of a quadrotor helicopter and the estimation of the model parameters in wind tunnel tests for hover, vertical climb, and forward flight conditions. The motion of a quadrotor is mainly affected by the aerodynamic forces and moments generated by rotors. Accurate calculation of rotor loads is essential for high fidelity simulation of a quadrotor. Momentum and blade element theories are used to obtain expressions for rotor forces and moments for a traveling vehicle. Th...
Genetic Algorithm based aerodynamic shape optimization tool for wind turbine blades and its implementation to helicopter blades
Polat, Özge; Sezer-uzol, Nilay; Tuncer, İsmail Hakkı (2014-01-01)
This study presents a methodology first built up for the aerodynamic shape optimization for wind turbine rotors and its modified version for a helicopter rotor in hover. The Genetic Algorithm (GA) coupled with an in-house Blade Element Momentum (BEM) tool is used in the design optimization process. The wind turbine blade optimization studies are performed for maximizing the power production at a given wind speed, rotor speed and rotor diameter, while for the helicopter blade optimization in hover, figure of...
Dynamic fracture of explosive bolt
Gökçe, Batuhan; Dal, Hüsnü; Yıldırım, Raif Orhan; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2018)
In this study, dynamic fracture of the pressure type explosive bolt is established with different geometry of the piston, which is used to break the body, to enhance the reliability of the system. Before the fracture analysis of the explosive bolts, pyrotechnic combustion analysis is studied and 0-D ballistic solver is developed to simulate the performance of the initiator into the pyrotechnic, namely pressure type, explosive bolt. By using the developed model, the pressure and temperature in the expansion ...
Experimental Investigation of Aerodynamics of Flapping-Wing Micro-Air-Vehicle by Force and Flow-Field Measurements
Deng, Shuanghou; Perçin, Mustafa; van Oudheusden, Bas (2016-02-01)
This study explores the aerodynamic characteristics of a flapping-wing micro aerial vehicle (MAV) in hovering configuration by means of force and flowfield measurements. The effects of flapping frequency and wing geometry on force generation were examined using a miniature six-component force sensor. Additional high-speed imaging allowed identification of the notable different deformation characteristics of the flexible wings under vacuum condition in comparison to their behavior in air, illustrating the re...
