Microplastics sampled downstream from a total of eight rivers were analysed as the first attempt to determine microplastic composition in rivers and load to Mersin Bay, in the north-eastern Mediterranean Sea. With a share of 83.5%, fibres were the dominant category from all samples. Basic characteristics (form, colour, average size, polymer) of microplastics from these rivers were similar to those reported from the marine environment in Mersin bay. The overall average number of microplastics calculated for the eight rivers was determined as 293 +/- 59 particles/m(3) equalling a load of 1200 billion items (mainly from the Goksu River) discharged annually to the northeastern Mediterranean. This value equivalent to twice the total stock of microplastics within the water column in Mersin Bay, demonstrates that rivers are a primary source of microplastics pollution for the coastal seas.

Riverine nutrient inputs to the Mersin Bay, northeastern Mediterranean
Akçay, İsmail (2018-10-21)
In this study, biochemical (nutrients, total phosphorus (TP), biological oxygen demand) parameters were determined seasonally at downstream points of the five regional rivers (major/small ones: Ceyhan, Seyhan, Goksu, Berdan, Lamas) flowing into wide shelf zone of the northeastern (NE) Mediterranean. Long-term chemical data obtained seasonally in the 2008-2015 period were examined to assess seasonal variations in the chemical concentrations and annual mass influxes to the studied coastal sites, leading to be...
Vertical distribution of marine cyanobacteria Synechococcus spp. in the Black, Marmara, Aegean, and eastern Mediterranean seas
Uysal, Zahit (2006-01-01)
The vertical distributions of the unicellular cyanobacteria Synechococcus were studied in several highly contrasting seas: the Black Sea, Sea of Marmara, Aegean Sea, and Mediterranean Sea. Cell abundances varied significantly on both vertical and horizontal scales in all physically and spatially discrete water masses. Epifluorescence microscope cell counts from all seas clearly showed that majority of the population remains suspended in the surface-mixed layer and decreases gradually towards the base of the...
Seasonal Changes in the Composition and Abundance ofZooplankton in the Seas of the Mediterranean Basin
Kovalev, Av; Mazzocchı, Mg; Toklu Alıçlı, Benin; Skryabın, Va; Kıdeyş, Ahmet Erkan (2003-01-01)
Seasonal changes in the composition, abundance and biomass of zooplankton in the seas of the Mediterranean basin (the Mediterranean, Black and Azov seas) have been reviewed using our own data and data from the literature. In the deep-water central regions of the seas, the seasonal cycle of zooplankton abundance is characterised by one maximum occurring in spring or summer. In the coastal regions, two to three peaks (spring, summer and autumn) exist for the zooplankton abundance. The amplitude of seasonal fl...
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sea sediments of the Turkish Mediterranean coast, composition and sources
Tuncel, Süleyman Gürdal (2015-03-01)
The concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined in 25 surface sediment samples from five sites located at Oludeniz Lagoon of the Turkish Mediterranean coast. The total concentration of the PAHs (1.85 +/- 1.39 mg/kg) was lower than the sediments from highly urbanized areas, while it was comparable with the sediments from similar locations. Acenaphthene and chrysene were dominant ones with the concentrations of 0.620 and 0.515 mg/kg, respectively. The isomeric ratios indicated th...
Zooplankton of the Black Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean Similarities and dissimilarities
Kovalev, Av; Mazzocchı, Mg; Sıokoufrangou, I.; Kıdeyş, Ahmet Erkan (2001-01-01)
A synthesis of data on abundance and biomass of zooplankton in the Eastern Mediterranean (EMED) and the Black Sea shows major differences in the composition and structure of pelagic communities in the two basins. Few Mediterranean planktonic animals have invaded in the Black Sea. The great bulk of Black Sea species is represented by coastal inhabitants that spread throughout the whole basin. This process has been called “neritization” of the Black Sea fauna. Peculiarities in zooplankton assemblages of the B...
