© 2022, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.Population growth in cities negatively affects global climate problems regarding environmental impact and energy demand of building stock. Thus, buildings should be examined for energy efficiency by reaching acceptable internal thermal comfort levels to take precautions against climate disasters. Although building energy simulations (BES) are widely used to examine retrofitting processes, the computational cost of urban-scale simulations is high. The use of machine learning techniques can decrease the cost of the process for the applicability of quantitative simulation-based analyses with high accuracy. This study presents the implementation of the k-means clustering algorithm in an Urban Building Energy Modeling (UBEM) framework to reduce the total computational cost of the simulation process. Within the scope of the work, two comparative analyses are performed to test the feasibility of the k-means clustering algorithm for UBEM. First, the performance of the k-means clustering algorithm was tested by using the observations on the training data set with design parameters and performance objectives. The second analysis tests the prediction accuracy under different selection rates (5% and 10%) from the clusters partitioned by the k-means clustering algorithm. The predicted and simulation-based calculated results of the selected observations were comparatively analyzed. Analyses show that the k-means clustering algorithm can effectively build performance prediction with archetype characterization for UBEM.

Adopting sustainability assessment criteria to guide urban regeneraton projects: two case studies in Ankara
Seyhan, Zeynep.; Elias Özkan, Soofia Tahira; Department of Architecture (2019)
Increasing awareness of climate change, loss of biodiversity and increase in environmental pollution due to the current trends of consumption in the urban areas have brought about a myriad of schemas to guide environmentally friendly urban developments. These schemes or Neighborhood Sustainability Assessment Tools (NSA Tools) provide a convenient way to establish healthier and sustainable cities. Meanwhile, Turkey is going through a rapid urban transformation process that is being questioned with respect to...
Multi-level wind energy transition in the Turkish context: Socio-spatial sensitivities and nudging conditions
Demir, Başak; Ataöv Demirkan, Anlı; Department of City and Regional Planning (2022-12-30)
Renewable energy development claims a contribution to sustainable living within the context of climate change and locally emerging environmental degradation problems. However, some existing practices lead to public opposition. The socio-spatial consequences of wind energy development taking place in the form of high-tech mega wind turbines within large-scale wind farms create unsustainable conditions in societies. This, in turn, requires a shift in the way it is practiced. By adopting a sociotechnical persp...
Architectural design for climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies in existing buildings
Akköse, Gizem; Gürsel Dino, İpek; Department of Architecture (2019)
Climate change has been proven largely to be a consequence of human activities and has a destructive impact on ecosystems. Societies and economies have become a growing global concern for the last few years and the building industry has a key role in this change due to its huge amount of environmental footprint. The energy consumption and greenhouse gases emissions of the built environment influence the climate in a negative way while the changing climate also influences the energy and thermal performance o...
A data-driven approach for predicting solar energy potential of buildings in urban fabric
Duran, Ayça; Gürsel Dino, İpek; Department of Architecture (2022-7)
Energy-efficient buildings that use clean and sustainable energy sources are urgently needed to reduce the environmental impact of buildings and mitigate climate change in cities. Buildings have great potential in harvesting solar energy by their solar exposure capacity. Developments in PV technologies also encourage the integration of PV systems into architectural applications. However, urban contexts can limit solar energy generation capacity of buildings by shading building envelopes and reducing availab...
Educational building retrofit under climate change and urban heat island effect
Akkose, Gizem; Akgül, Çağla; Gürsel Dino, İpek (2021-08-01)
Climate change (CC) and urban heat island (UHI) are important environmental forces that have serious consequences for the existing buildings, such as increased resource consumption and environmental footprint, adverse human health effects and reduced occupant comfort. In this context, educational buildings represent a critical category amongst other building typologies, due to their high energy use, high occupant density, atypical daily/annual occupancy patterns, and their occupants’ high vulnerability to h...
