The production of a mise en scene for a nation and its subjects: Clemens Holzmeister et al. in the Ministries Quarter for Ankara, Turkey
Cengizkan, Ali (Informa UK Limited, 2010-01-01)
The Ministries Quarter, the MQ, in Ankara, the capital of Turkey, is a very interesting case for modern planning and architecture, conceptualised and developed in the first quarter of the twentieth century. As with other governmental centres and administrative hubs, it was attributed the mission of representing the political power of the newly born nation, facilitating physical, symbolic, cultural and historic channels of producing meaning. However, the successive intervention and involvement of architects,...
From Praise to Condemnation: Ottoman Revivalism and the Production of Space in Early Republican Ankara
Basa, İnci (2015-07-01)
This article observes how architectural practice and symbolic appropriations interconnectedly produced space in 1920s' Ankara, the new capital of the new Republic of Turkey. The once magnificent and powerful Istanbul, capital of the Ottoman Empire, had its centuries long authority removed to disassociate the country from corporeal memories of its Ottoman past. The old capital was associated both with imperial and Islamic characteristics, and the republicans aimed to build a capital that spatially represente...
The Role of the Train Station in the Image Formation of the Early Republican Ankara
Sak, Segah; Basa, İnci (2012-07-01)
Depending on the assumption that buildings play the fundamental role in the formation of cities and their image, this study investigates the contribution of the Train Station to the formation of Ankara and its image in the early years of the Turkish Republic. The spatial entity of the station reflected the intended modern identity of the new state. Orienting the movement and development within its setting, the building constituted an indispensable element of the structure of the city. It acted as an immedia...
The formation of a modern city: Antalya, 1920s-1980s
Bölükbaş Dayı, Esin.; Altan, T. Elvan.; Department of History of Architecture (2019)
This dissertation examines the place of the concept of “local” in architectural historiography by focusing on the modernization process of Antalya. The analysis of the process is realized within two major contexts. On the one hand, the “peripheral” position of Antalya in canonic historiography is discussed in the frame of center-periphery relations and central-local actors; on the other hand, the developments both in the city center and its hinterlands are examined through the dualities of rural and urban, ...
