Molecular mechanisms of vincristine and paclitaxel resistance in mcf-7 cell line
Demirel Kars, Meltem; Gündüz, Ufuk; Department of Biotechnology (2008)
Resistance to broad spectrum of chemotherapeutic agents in cancer cell lines and tumors has been called multiple drug resistance (MDR). In this study, the molecular mechanisms of resistance to two anticancer agents (paclitaxel and vincristine) in mammary carcinoma cell line MCF-7 were investigated. MCF-7 cells were selected in the presence of paclitaxel and vincristine by stepwise dose increments. The cell viability and growth profiles of resistant sublines were examined. As the resistance indices increased...
Molecular investigation of the effects of antioxidants on rat brain tissues
Akkaş, Sara Banu; Severcan, Feride; Department of Biological Sciences (2003)
The brain is highly susceptible to free radical damage since it is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids and consumes very high amounts of oxygen. In this study, the effects on rat brain tissue of several antioxidants, namely lipoic acid, vitamin E and melatonin, were examined as the control studies of further research, in which their ability to protect the rat brain tissue from oxidative stress will be investigated. The tool of investigation selected was Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) because...
Molecular detection of Nosema ceranae and N. apis from Turkish honey bees
Whitaker, Justin; Szalanski, Allen L.; Kence, Meral (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2011-03-01)
Polymerase chain reaction specific for the rDNA marker for Nosema ceranae and Nosema apis was conducted on 84 Apis mellifera samples collected from 20 provinces in Turkey. N. ceranae was detected from three samples from the provinces of Artvin, Hatay, and Mugla. N. apis was detected in samples from the provinces of Sivas, Izmir, Bitlis and Gaziantep. All of the positive samples were from honey bees belonging to the 'C' lineage of A. mellifera. DNA sequencing analysis of the N. ceranae samples revealed that ...
