Three Hagia Sophias as Ideological Battlegrounds of Architectural Conservation
Aykaç Leıdholm, Pınar (2018-09-11)
This paper will discuss how the conversion of religious monuments is a manifestation of dominance of one group over another through the stories of three Hagia Sophias (in Iznik, Trabzon, and Vize). Converting Byzantine churches into mosques became a customary practice during the Ottoman period, as symbols of Islamic ascendency, with Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia among the best known. Unlike other converted churches, Hagia Sophia’s name remained as Ayasofya Mosque, keeping its Byzantine memory alive. Similarly, th...
THREE NEW GENUS RECORDS OF THE SPIDER FAUNA OF TURKEY (ARANEAE: SALTICIDAE)
COŞAR, İLHAN; Elverici, Mert; Danigman, Tarik; Kunt, Kadir Bogac (2013-09-01)
New records of 3 genera and 3 species of Salticidae from Turkey are presented for Bianor albobimaculatus (Lucas, 1846), Dendryphantes rudis (Sundevall, 1833) and Hyllus insularis Metzner, 1999. Their morphology is briefly described and illustrated. Current knowledge on diversity of Salticidae in Turkey is also reviewed. Total number of Salticidae species recorded from Turkey now is 102.
Three essays on education in Turkey
Bircan, Fatma; Tansel, Aysıt; Department of Economics (2005)
This thesis analyzes the pecuniary aspects of education in Turkey. It consists of three essays. The first essay deals with the demand for education, focusing on private tutoring expenditures of households. The study investigates the determinants of private tutoring expenditures of households using a Tobit model as the estimation method. It is found that wealthier households with higher levels of parental education are more likely to participate in private tutoring. The second essay concerns the wage inequal...
3-DIMENSIONAL NUMERICAL MODELING OF TUNNEL INDUCED DEFORMATION FIELD (NECATIBEY SUBWAY STATION, ANKARA, TURKEY)
AKTÜRK, ÖZGÜR; Doyuran, Vedat (2011-06-25)
In heavily settled areas, deformations induced by the tunnel excavation may cause serious damage to nearby structures. Therefore, it is necessary to study effective means of controlling tunnel induced deformations. The main parameters affecting the failure and deformation state of the soil around a circular underground opening are the physical characteristics of the soil, the diameter of the opening, and the support pressure. In this study, 3-Dimensional (3D) FDM analyses were conducted to assess tunneling ...
