Three low-Ca and three high-Ca coal fly ashes (CFAs) were activated with 10 M NaOH at an activator-to-CFA ratio of 0.5. Prepared pastes were cast into 5 × 5 × 5 cm cubes (for mechanical tests) and Φ6 × 4 cm cylinders (for thermal constant tests), cured at 80 °C for 24 h, and then stored in the fog room for 28 days. Samples were then exposed to 400, 700, and 1000 °C for 1 h and cooled in the furnace. The morphological and mineralogical changes due to heat exposure were studied through X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA/DTA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). The performances of the AAF samples before and after heat exposure were evaluated by measuring thermal conductivity (λ), volumetric specific capacity (cvol) and compressive strength. Mechanical performance varied considerably after exposure to elevated temperatures depending on the exposure temperature and intrinsic properties of the activated CFA, low-Ca AAFs being more stable than high-Ca AAFs, whereas exposure significantly reduced λ and cvol values for all AAFs.

Effect of fly ash on swell pressure of an expansive soil
Çokça, Erdal (1999-12-01)
This paper discusses the effect of Fly ash on the engineering properties of expansive soils. As reviewed in literature, many previous investigations have shown promising results for improvement of expansive soil after stabilization with Fly ash. Laboratory tests have been conducted on expansive soils obtained from three different regions in Khartoum state. Various percentages of Fly ash such as 0%, 10%, 20%, 25%, and 30% by weight of soil were added to the three soils and their inf...
Effect of particle size on coal pyrolysis
Kök, Mustafa Verşan; Karacan, Ozgen; Hicyilmaz, Cahit (1998-01-01)
This research comprises the effect of particle size on coal pyrolysis by thermogravimetry (TG/DTG). All the experiments were conducted at non-isothermal heating conditions with a heating rate of 10 degrees C min(-1). in the temperature range of 20-600 degrees C, under nitrogen atmosphere. Different fractions of Cayirhan coal coal showed differences in TG/DTG curves, peak temperatures and residue values. The Arrhenius model is applied to determine the kinetic parameters from TG/DTG curves.
Influence of soot on radiative heat transfer in bubbling fluidized bed combustors
Yaşar, Mehmet Soner; Selçuk, Nevin; Külah, Görkem (2021-08-01)
The effect of soot particles and aggregates on radiative heat transfer in bubbling fluidized bed combustors is investigated. For this purpose, a soot radiative property model based on Rayleigh scattering theory is coupled with in-house developed 1-D gray and spectral radiation codes and a 3-D spectral radiation code based on method of lines solution of discrete ordinates method for the application of (i) a 1-D slab problem involving combustion gases and soot and (ii) freeboard of a 0.3 MWt atmospheric bubbl...
High frequency capacitively coupled RF plasma discharge effects on the order/disorder structure of PAN-based carbon fiber
Güngör, Ümmugül E.; Bilikmen, Sinan; Akbar, Demiral (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2014-5-14)
High-resolution confocal Raman microscopy was used to investigate the effects of nitrogen plasma on unsized high strength (HS) PAN-based carbon fiber surfaces. The fibers were treated by a high frequency (40.68 MHz) capacitively coupled single RF-PECVD reactor under different processing conditions (exposure times, RF powers and gas pressures). It was found that the order/disorder structure of the treated carbon fiber changed with different processing conditions. At low pressures, the degree of disordered st...
Frost Susceptibility Properties of Soma-B Fly Ash
Çokça, Erdal (1997-04-01)
This paper assesses the effect of freeze-thaw properties of compacted fly ash specimens likely to affect its use as fill material, on the basis of laboratory investigations conducted on Soma-B Thermal Power plant ashes in western Turkey. Test specimens were subjected to compaction. Changes in strength with curing time and freeze-thaw cycles are measured using unconfined compression tests, and increases in strength with curing time and the number of freeze-thaw cycles were observed. The findings suggest that...
