Mechanical connections such as bolts and rivets are inevitable in most engineering structures and may significantly affect the dynamic behavior of the structures. Therefore, modeling a joint simply and accurately is essential for assembled structures. On the other hand, the most important step is the determination of these joint model parameters which will be used in the calculation of dynamic response of assembled structures. For this purpose, in this paper, FRF Decoupling Method (FRF-DM), proposed in an earlier study for bolted beam connections is extended in two ways: Firstly, the bolt model proposed for 2D beam elements is extended to 3D finite element models of structural systems, and thus the dynamics of a bolted connection is modeled as an equivalent 6×6 complex stiffness matrix including linear and torsional stiffnesses. Secondly, FRF-DM is extended to include measurements at connection degrees of freedoms, which improves the accuracy in identification. Several equations for the identification of joint parameters are derived utilizing FRF-DM. Joint parameters are calculated by using developed FRF decoupling relations, as well as by employing a recently developed method called Inverse Structural Modification Method (ISMM) in a case study consisting of two beams connected by a 6x6 stiffness and viscous damping matrices. The accuracy and the advantages of each method/formulation are discussed by using the case study based on simulated experiments.

Dynamic characterization of bolted joints using FRF decoupling and optimization
Tol, Serife; Özgüven, Hasan Nevzat (2015-03-01)
Mechanical connections play a significant role in predicting dynamic characteristics of assembled structures. Therefore, equivalent dynamic models for joints are needed. Due to the complexity of joints, it is difficult to describe joint dynamics with analytical models. Reliable models are generally obtained using experimental measurements. In this paper an experimental identification method based on FRF decoupling and optimization algorithm is proposed for modeling joints. In the method the FRFs of two subs...
Nonlinear reduced order modeling of bolted joints
Karapıstık, Gökhan; Ciğeroğlu, Ender; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2019)
Most of the structural systems assembled by using bolted joints. Therefore, bolted joint models have a critical importance to estimate the behavior of the overall assembled system. There are several linear bolted joint models, which consist of spring and dashpot elements in literature. While they can estimate the resonant frequency of the overall system with a sufficient accuracy, linear bolted joint models are inadequate for approximating the damping, which arises from the friction in the contact interface...
Dynamic modeling of structural joints
Tol, Şerife; Özgüven, Hasan Nevzat; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2012)
Complex systems composed of many substructures include various structural joints connecting the substructures together. These mechanical connections play a significant role in predicting the dynamic characteristics of the assembled systems accurately. Therefore, equivalent dynamic models of joints that consist of stiffness and damping elements should be developed and the joint parameters should be determined for an accurate vibration analysis. Since it is difficult to estimate joint parameters accurately by...

Optimum Detailed Design of Reinforced Concrete Continuous Beams using the Harmony Search Algorithm
Akin, A.; Saka, M. P. (2010-09-17)
Design optimization of reinforced concrete structures is more challenging than that of steel structures due to the complexity associated with reinforcement design. In this study, optimum design algorithm is presented for reinforced concrete continuous beams. The design variables are selected as the width and the depth of beams in each span, the diameter and the number of longitudinal reinforcement bars along span and supports, and the diameter of ties. The design constraints are implemented from ACI 318-05 ...
