Construction project delivery has been evolving with digitalization of the industry. On the way of the digitalization, Building Information Modelling (BIM) is one of the leading developments such that most project deliverables are accomplished collaboratively among project participants through information models to successfully design and manage construction. The management of project deliverables in collaboration necessitates a common data environment in which each participant can access the permissioned project deliverables at any time, which means a network built on the web. In this manner, construction projects have begun to be managed in cloud-based document management systems (DMS). DMS helps the completion of a project systematically by providing an environment for storage, retrieval and management of the project documents. Despite its irreplaceable return, DMS constitutes remarkable issues related with security, serviceability and cost. Blockchain technology with its features of decentralization, transparency, immutability and security is well-matched with the issues of DMS. Thus, this study aims to develop a decentralized document management system (DDMS) with the integration of Ethereum blockchain which is a public blockchain and Interplanetary File System (IPFS) for construction project delivery by deploying a smart contract. A decentralized application is designed for the proposed system to allow the participants to use it with ease while blockchain ensures immutability of document exchanges and IPFS stores the document on the distributed network securely. The contributions and limitations of the DDMS are demonstrated and discussed through a Metro Line project.

An intelligent BIM-based automated progress monitoring system using self-navigating robots for data acquisition
Hassan, Muhammad Usman; Akçamete Güngör, Aslı; Department of Civil Engineering (2018)
Construction managers require a continuous flow of timely and accurate site status information that is acquired efficiently for successful project delivery. Current methods of data acquisition from the site are error-prone, laborious, and unable to provide timely information to project stakeholders for effective decision making. In this research, we developed a methodology for extraction of data points using BIM, acquisition of progress data using self-navigating robots, estimation of progress information u...
A process modeling based method for identification and implementation of software development tool integration-tuples
Ertürkmen, K. Alpay; Demirörs, Onur; Department of Information Systems (2010)
Software development is highly dependent on the use of tools. These tools support and automate activities performed in different sub-domains of software development. However, they don‘t adequately provide or support integration facilities, and act as ―islands of automation‖. This restricts their benefits to only specific parts of the process. To reap the benefits of integration, this thesis provides a process modeling based method named PLETIN to identify and implement software development tool integration-...
A smart contract system for security of payment of construction contracts
Ahmadisheykhsarmast, Salar; Sönmez, Rifat (Elsevier BV, 2020-12-01)
© 2020 Elsevier B.V.Timely payment of project participants is crucial for successful completion of construction projects, however the construction industry worldwide suffers from poor payment practices. The existing research studied the reasons and the consequences of the payment problem, but very few studies proposed methods for eliminating the problem. In this paper a novel smart contract payment security system named SMTSEC is presented for eliminating or reducing payment issues in the construction secto...
A Method for Facilitating 4D Modeling by Automating Task Information Generation and Mapping
Altun, Murat; Akçamete Güngör, Aslı (2018-10-04)
4D modeling integrates 3D model with project time schedule to provide virtual simulation for identifying spatio-temporal problems earlier in construction projects. However, constructing a 4D model takes a significant amount of time and is prone to man-made errors due to its manual steps and repetitive nature. Therefore, in this study, a model based two-phase method is developed to facilitate linking 3D model with the schedule by automating the cumbersome steps. In the first phase, 4D Task IDs are created an...
A knowledge-based risk management tool for construction projects using case-based reasoning
Okudan, Ozan; Budayan, Cenk; Dikmen Toker, İrem (2021-07-01)
Construction projects are often deemed as complex and high-risk endeavours, mostly because of their vulnerability to external conditions as well as project-related uncertainties. Risk management (RM) is a critical success factor for companies operating in the construction industry. RM is a knowledge-intensive process that requires effective management of risk-related knowledge. Although some research has already been conducted to develop tools to support knowledge-based RM processes, most of these tools ign...
