In this paper, the focus was to develop an optimization tool by using mathematical layout optimization methods applied to increase the energy capacity or reduce the cost of anoffshore wind farm. For this purpose, two wind farm layout optimization (WFLO) models were developed using genetic algorithm (GA): model (a) minimizing the cost of power for variableturbinenumber, model (b) maximizing the power generation for fixed turbine number. Wind speed and wind direction were assumed constant. Therefore, unlike previous studies, smaller grid sizes were used in the models developed in this study, and better-performing layouts were obtained than in the literature. Continuous approach to WFLO guarantees the best result since it evaluates unlimited number of possibilities. However, it complicates the problem as well as brings high computational costs. Therefore, discrete approach was used in this study, and the performance of using finer grids was investigated. As a result, it was observed that the optimum layout may be improved as the grid size got smaller. Following this, developed models within the scope of this study were applied to a high offshore wind potential area in Turkey, and a preliminary wind farm layout design was proposed for this area.

Evaluation and Comparisons of the Models to Calculate Solar Irradiation on Inclined Solar Panels for Ankara
Özden, Talat; Akınoğlu, Bülent Gültekin; Karaveli, Abdullah Buğrahan (2017-11-29)
In the optimization and feasibility analysis of renewable energy systems, the accuracy of the simulation methods is extremely important. Thus, in the case of solar energy systems, estimating the monthly average daily solar irradiation incident on inclined solar panels is the main step of long-term feasibility analysis toward reaching the viable investments. In fact, most solar energy investor companies use silicon solar irradiation measuring instruments in Turkey although only a few of them also measure the...
Analysis and design of conformal frequency selective surfaces /
Dalkılıç, Akın; Alatan, Lale; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2014)
An efficient analysis and design approach for conformal frequency selective surface (FSS) structures is developed. The design methodology involves the analysis of both the planar and curved FSS structures. First, planar unit cell analysis of conformal FSS models are accomplished for normal and oblique incidence cases. To prove conformal applicability of planar designs, a semi-finite analysis method is utilized. This method is based on solution of a singly periodic curved FSS structure of semi-cylinder shape...
Development of high performance heuristic and meta-heuristic methods for resource optimization of large scale construction projects
Abbasi Iranagh, Mahdi; Sönmez, Rifat; Department of Civil Engineering (2015)
Despite the importance of resource optimization in construction scheduling, very little success has been achieved in solving the resource leveling problem (RLP) and resource constrained discrete time-cost trade-off problem (RCDTCTP), especially for large-scale projects. The major objective of this thesis is to design and develop new heuristic and meta-heuristic methods to achieve fast and high quality solutions for the large-scale RLP and RCDTCTP. Two different methods are presented in this thesis for the R...
A Case Study on Feasibility Assessment of Small Hydropower Scheme
Korkmaz, Ozan; Yanmaz, Ali Melih; Tiğrek, Şahnaz; Department of Civil Engineering (2007)
Feasibility studies concerning decision-making for various types of items to be used in a small hydropower scheme is important for estimating the energy generation, the approximate cost of the project, and the required budget allocation. A computer program named RETScreen, which is commonly used in the North Americas, is capable of evaluating the energy generation, investment and maintenance costs for small hydro-projects. This thesis is based on application of this program to the Turkish practice. To this ...
