The Effects of youth minimum wage on labour market and schooling outcomes: evidence from Turkey
Küçükbayrak, Müşerref; Dayıoğlu Tayfur, Meltem; Tümen, Semih; Department of Economics (2018)
This study analyzes the impact of youth minimum wage policy on labour market and schooling outcomes in Turkey based on a quasi-experimental approach. Before January 2014, minimum wage was determined according to the age of a worker. Young workers under 16 years of age were entitled to get a lower pay. This created a cut-off at the wages paid to workers based on this age. Differentiation of minimum wage was eliminated in 2014. Exploiting this cut-off, we use an RD design to study the effects of minimum wage ...
Brain drain from Turkey : an empirical investigation of the determinants of skilled migration and student non-return
Güngör, Nil Demet; Tansel, Aysıt; Department of Economics (2004)
This study deals with skilled migration from a developing country perspective. The migration of skilled individuals from developing countries to developed countries is often viewed as a costly subsidy from the poor nations to the rich, and a threat to their economic development. The first part of the study brings up to date both the theoretical and the policy debate on the impact of skilled migration on the sending economies. The second purpose of the study is to take a closer look at the motivations for sk...
Trends in housing markets during the economic crisis and Covid-19 pandemic: Turkish case
Khurami, Esma Aksoy; Özdemir Sarı, Özgül Burcu (2022-10-01)
The recent global economic crisis and pandemic have shown that housing markets are highly exposed to the prevailing economic and social circumstances. Relevant literature indicates that housing output and transaction volumes were negatively affected during the Covid-19 pandemic. In contrast, price levels displayed variations under different circumstances shaped by demand shifts. Housing affordability conditions also deteriorated and household budgets were squeezed by the high housing cost burden due to the ...
INTEGRATION THROUGH SMALL-SCALE BUSINESS: THE CASE OF ENTREPRENEURS WITH TURKISH “MIGRANT” BACKGROUND IN GERMANY
Çelik, Melisa; Ergun Özbolat, Ayça; Department of Sociology (2022-8)
Self-employment as an economic activity has a considerable matter in the migration context. It is associated with social, cultural, political, and economic spheres in which migrants and people with migration background are situated. Migrant entrepreneurship as a particular form of self-employment is related to the transnational labour market since it reflects both these spheres in the host country and immigrant networks and organisations within and across borders. In the migration literature, migrant entrep...
