Return on education in Turkey: A regional analysis (2008-2018)

Koç, Ahmet Ali
This article analyzes the change in the returns of education at different points of the wage distribution in twelve regions of Turkey according to the classification Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS-1). The estimates are based on the Mincer wage equation, but quantile regression technique was used to identify variations between returns to education at different wage levels. The data is taken from the Household Labor Force Survey for the years 2008, 2013 and, 2018. Education in Turkey is characterized by sustained expansion at the university level or higher. The results indicates that the returns of education in the Turkish labor market have decreased over time. In 2008, the rate of return on one additional education year for a worker was ranging between 5 percent and 7.8 percent, while in 2018, it declined to between 3.7 and 6.4 percent. The results obtained in this study show the relationship between the distribution of wages and the educational level of the workforce are consistent with those found in previous studies.

This thesis investigates the association between health and education for Turkey by using Turkish Health Survey (THS) data set. In the analysis, we focus on the individuals who are 25 years old or older. Second, we examine the effect of education on individual’s Self-Assessed Health Status (SAH) empirically by ...
Wage Inequality and Returns to Education in Turkey: A Quantile Regression Analysis
Tansel, Aysıt (2012-02-01)
This paper investigates the male wage inequality and its evolution over the 19942002 period in Turkey by estimating Mincerian wage equations using ordinary least squares and quantile regression techniques. Male wage inequality is high in Turkey. While it declined at the lower end of the wage distribution it increased at the top end of wage distribution. Education contributed to higher wage inequality through both within and between dimensions. The within-groups inequality increased and between-groups inequa...
Essays on unemployment in Turkey
Taşçı, H. Mehmet; Tansel, Aysıt; Department of Economics (2005)
In this study we examine the Turkish labor market by using the Household Labor Force Survey data for the years 2000 and 2001. There are three main essays in this study. In the first essay, the determinants of transitions between the labor market states of employment, unemployment, and out-of-labor force are examined by using multinomial-logit models. We observe from the transitions out of employment that workers with low education and those working in the non-public sector have a higher risk of losing their...

This thesis wants to fill this gap and as well as contribute the literature of Turkish labor market and OSS, with analyzing the most current data of Household Labor ...
A Comparison Of JMP Wage Decomposition And Quantile Regression Methods In Wage Inequality Assessment
Yağanoğlu, Nazmi; Ercan, Hakan (Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi (Ankara, Turkey), 2008-12)
The decomposition technique of Juhn, Murphy and Pierce (1993) and quantile regression are two of the main tools of wage inequality analysis. JMP technique has the advantage of decomposing the change in wages into three components, and showing residual inequality easily. Quantile regression has the advantage of showing a detailed picture of wage distribution at different quantiles. We apply both techniques to March Current Population Survey (CPS) data of the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) to analyze the...
