This paper investigates the male wage inequality and its evolution over the 19942002 period in Turkey by estimating Mincerian wage equations using ordinary least squares and quantile regression techniques. Male wage inequality is high in Turkey. While it declined at the lower end of the wage distribution it increased at the top end of wage distribution. Education contributed to higher wage inequality through both within and between dimensions. The within-groups inequality increased and between-groups inequality decreased over the study period. The latter factor may have dominated the former contributing to the observed decline in the male wage inequality over the 19942002. Further results are provided for the wage effects of experience, public sector employment, geographic location, firm size, industry of employment and their contribution to wage inequality. Recent increases in foreign direct investiment inflows, openness to trade and global technological developments are discussed as contributing factors to the recent rising within-groups wage inequality.

Wage Inequality and Wage Mobility in Turkey
Tansel, Aysıt; Guven, Aytekin (2019-02-01)
This paper investigates wage inequality and wage mobility in Turkey using the surveys on income and living conditions. Providing the first evidence on wage mobility for Turkey, our paper also differs from the existing literature by investigating wage inequality and wage mobility over various socio-economic groups. We first present an overview of wage inequality over the period 2005-2011. Next, we compute several measures of wage mobility and explore the link between wage inequality and wage mobility. Furthe...
A Comparison Of JMP Wage Decomposition And Quantile Regression Methods In Wage Inequality Assessment
Yağanoğlu, Nazmi; Ercan, Hakan (Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi (Ankara, Turkey), 2008-12)
The decomposition technique of Juhn, Murphy and Pierce (1993) and quantile regression are two of the main tools of wage inequality analysis. JMP technique has the advantage of decomposing the change in wages into three components, and showing residual inequality easily. Quantile regression has the advantage of showing a detailed picture of wage distribution at different quantiles. We apply both techniques to March Current Population Survey (CPS) data of the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) to analyze the...
Immigrant domestic women workers in Ankara and Istanbul
Çelik, Nihal; Ecevit, Fatma Yıldız; Department of Sociology (2005)
This study focuses on the relationship between global economy and women̕s labor within a feminist standpoint by examining the personal and occupational experiences of immigrant women doing domestic work in Turkey. The main concern of this study is to investigate how working and living experiences of immigrant domestic women workers in Turkey are shaped by their illegal worker and immigrant status. The aim of this study is to listen to the personal experiences of immigrant domestic women workers from themsel...
Return on education in Turkey: A regional analysis (2008-2018)
Rodríguez Guerrero, Diego Alejandro; Koç, Ahmet Ali (ODTÜ İktisadi ve İdari Bilimler Fakültesi, 2022-12)
This article analyzes the change in the returns of education at different points of the wage distribution in twelve regions of Turkey according to the classification Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS-1). The estimates are based on the Mincer wage equation, but quantile regression technique was used to identify variations between returns to education at different wage levels. The data is taken from the Household Labor Force Survey for the years 2008, 2013 and, 2018. Education in Turkey i...
Non-linear programming models for sector and policy analysis
Bauer, Siegfried; Kasnakoglu, Haluk (Elsevier BV, 1990-7)
This paper examines the basic problems of the mathematical programming models used for agricultural sector and policy analysis. Experience with traditional programming models shows that a considerable improvement in performance is possible by adequately incorporating non-linear relationships. Particular emphasis will be given to the calibration and validation problems involved in this type of model. With the help of the Turkish agricultural sector model it will be demonstrated that an empirical specificatio...
