User Experience (UX) research is an essential part of the design process that supports design activities by providing relevant user knowledge. Building on this knowledge, UX designers aim to find design solutions to ill-defined design problems by using creative thinking and exploration methods. To provide reliable and valid results in this process, UX research should be conducted in a scientific and structured way, addressing both rigour (meticulousness of the research plan and process) and relevance (usefulness of the outcomes). However, given the needs and limitations of the commercial settings, the practitioners need to focus on practical utility rather than scientific assumptions. This situation affects how rigour and relevance concepts are defined and implemented. Moreover, adopting remote ways of conducting UX research practices due to COVID-19 results in a reassessment of previous values. Therefore, understanding the commercial context and UX researchers’ practices in remote settings is crucial in enhancing the transition from design research to practice. This study aims to investigate rigour and relevance in UX research to suggest strategies for achieving useful and appropriate outcomes by considering commercial context. To achieve that, a comprehensive literature review was conducted on the critical dimensions of research quality, and multiple-case study was carried out to illustrate firms’ current UX research practices. As a result, recommendations on conducting ‘good research’, considering both practical utility and scientific assumptions, are presented. The outcome of this work, the Rigour and Relevance Model for UX Research, provides strategies and recommendations to improve the quality of UX research practices.

Effective Communicatıon Of User Research Outcomes In Design For Well-Being: Adaptation Of The Design Well-Being Matrix In A Pregnancy Case
Günay, Aslı (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 2020-6-30)
Effective communication of user research deliverables plays a crucial role during all design processes to effectively and meaningfully inform design decisions. As newly introduced materials, such as frameworks and tools, in emergent fields are actually mediums for communicating information in different phases of research, effective communication of them would foster the development of a shared and established language, and thus, robust progression of these fields. This paper investigates effective communica...
Information system for visualizing user research to lead innovation
Töre Yargın, Gülşen (2012-08-09)
It is commonly accepted that user research has crucial benefits for the design process including its contribution to innovation processes. In order to lead innovation through user research, besides the content of the research, it is important that the delivery should be done effectively so that design strategies that result in innovation can be adopted in the design process and the findings can guide designers to create novel outputs. This paper aims to discuss the requirements for user research delivery th...
Perceived values of web based collective design platforms from the perspective of industrial designers in reference to Quirky and OpenIDEO
Hajiamiri, Milad; Korkut, Fatma (2015-03-01)
Web-based collective design platforms are virtual environments which highly rely on large-scale participation of people from diverse backgrounds in different phases of the design process. Understanding and motivating participants is important to enhance the diversity of solutions and approaches in such platforms. This study investigates the motivation factors for the designer members of the crowd, and explores the perceived values of these platforms from the perspective of industrial designers. An empirical...
Involving end users in retrofit of higher education buildings
Gooding, Luke; Erdogan, Bilge; Gürsel Dino, İpek (2021-12-01)
Although the importance of end user participation during building improvement design is widely accepted, selecting the best approach for the engagement of users in design processes is a significant challenge. This paper assesses how qualitative end user engagement during retrofit planning can aid the design process of energy retrofits in higher education institutions. The application of this early stage approach to make design decisions is presented via a case study, carried out in the Faculty of Architectu...
Investigation of pre-service teachers’ self-efficacy beliefs and attitudes toward teaching profession through canonical analysis
Tarkın, Ayşegül; Kondakçı, Esen (2012-03-01)
Bu çalışmanın amacı öğretmen adaylarının özyeterlik inançları ile öğretmenlik mesleğine yönelik tutumları arasındaki ilişkiyi incelemektir. Çalışmaya son sınıfta öğrenim görmekte olan 315 öğretmen adayı katılmıştır. Veri toplamak için Öğretmen Özyeterlik Ölçeği ve Öğretmenlik Mesleğine Karşı Tutum Ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Kanonik korelasyon analizi sonuçları öğrenciyi derse katmaya ve öğretim yöntemlerini kullanmaya dair yüksek özyeterliğe sahip öğretmen adaylarının öğretmenlik mesleğini daha çok sevdiğini gö...
