Timing studies of X Persei and the discovery of its transient quasi-periodic oscillation feature
Acuner, Z.; İNAM, SITKI ÇAĞDAŞ; Sahiner, S.; Serim, Muhammed Miraç; Baykal, Altan; Swank, J. (2014-10-11)
We present a timing analysis of X Persei (X Per) using observations made between 1998 and 2010 with the Proportional Counter Array (PCA) onboard the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) and with the INTEGRAL Soft Gamma-Ray Imager (ISGRI). All pulse arrival times obtained from the RXTE-PCA observations are phase-connected and a timing solution is obtained using these arrival times. We update the long-term pulse frequency history of the source by measuring its pulse frequencies using RXTE-PCA and ISGRI data. Fr...
Timing and spectral analysis of 2S 1417-624 during its 2018 outburst
Serim, Muhammed Miraç; Ozudogru, O. C.; Donmez, C. K.; Sahiner, S.; Serim, D.; Baykal, Altan; Inam, S. C. (2022-02-01)
We investigate timing and spectral characteristics of the transient X-ray pulsar 2S 1417-624 during its 2018 outburst with NICER follow up observations. We describe the spectra with high-energy cut-off and partial covering fraction absorption (PCFA) model and present flux-dependent spectral changes of the source during the 2018 outburst. Utilizing the correlation-mode switching of the spectral model parameters, we confirm the previously reported sub-critical to critical regime transitions and we argue that ...
Timing observations from Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE)
Beklen, Elif; Baykal, Altan; Department of Physics (2004)
In this thesis, RXTE observations of 4U 1907+09 are presented. Timing analysis of these data sets have yielded quasi periodic oscillations (QPOs) at orbital phases corresponding to the two flares in every orbital period. Known continuous spin down trend and QPO behaviour at the flares strongly suggest that a transient accretion disk occurs at the flares. Our findings strongly suggested that neutron star passes through the equatorial wind of Be companion star. During these passages a transient disk forms aro...
Timing studies on RXTE observations of SAX J2103.5+4545
Baykal, Altan; Stark, M. J.; Heffner, C. M.; Erkoca, A. E.; Swank, J. H. (2007-01-21)
SAX J2103.5+4545 has been continuously monitored for similar to 900 d by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) since its outburst in 2002 July. Using these observations and previous archival RXTE observations of SAX J2103.5+4545, we refined the binary orbital parameters and find the new orbital period as P = (12.665 36 +/- 0.000 88) d and the eccentricity as 0.4055 +/- 0.0032. With these new orbital parameters, we constructed the pulse frequency and pulse frequency derivative histories of the pulsar and co...
Timing issues in a terawatt laser system
Yılmaz, Remziye Pınar; Altan, Hakan; Department of Physics (2008)
In the laser market, there have been various kinds of lasers designed and utilized for different purposes. As time goes on, their powers have been gradually increased from kilowatts (kW) to terawatts (TW). One of the most famous methods in laser science technology is Chirped Pulse Amplification (CPA) which enables table-top terawatt laser systems. This method provides high output power (tens of TW), very short pulse duration (few tens of femtoseconds) and large energy (mJ) for ultrafast lasers. One of the m...
