Heat damage assessment of carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites by diffuse reflectance infrared fourier transform spectroscopy

Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectroscopy was used to assess the effects of heat damage on carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites in this thesis study. Moisture saturated carbon-epoxy laminates were heat damaged above their upper service temperature. Loss of matrix dominated mechanical properties due to heat exposure was investigated in laboratory environmental testing conditions using mechanical tests, ultrasonic C-scanning and DRIFT spectroscopy. DRIFT spectroscopy was observed to be a more effective technique with respect to ultrasonic inspection in evaluating the extent of heat damage and a good iiicorrelation was found between mechanical test results and DRIFT spectra. The increase in carbonyl band integral, the decrease in phenyl ratio and hydroxyl and hydrocarbon band integrals evident from the DRIFT spectra were accompanied by a decrease in the mechanical strength of the composite material.
