Major debates in the Turkish left on class in the 1960s

This study deals with on what kind of a class conceptualisation the different approaches in the Turkish left in the 1960's based their analysis. The way in which these approaches made the class structure of Turkey, how they related this class analysis with their suggested revolutionary strategies constitute the basic axes of the discussion conducted by the study. In order to find out on what methodological and theoretical grounds the different conceptualisations of class are based, both the ideas of the main representatives of the approaches like Doğan Avcıoğlu, Mehmet Ali Aybar, Behice Boran and the documents of YÖN movement as well as those of the Turkish Workers' Party (TİP) are used.IV In the study while the fact that these approaches, despite their differences depart from some common premises is underlined, it is also attempted to give a critique of the methodological inadequacies and vulnerabilities of the debates on class in the 1960's. In spite of the rich content of the debates, the basic problem is presented as the lack of a relational conceptualisation of class.
