Experimental evaluation of “ball rubber bearings” at different temperatures
Erdal, Serkan; Caner, Alp; Department of Civil Engineering (2010)
Rubber material used in seismic isolation systems has a tendency to stiffen in cold climate conditions. Structural responses of rubber based seismic isolation bearings are known to be temperature dependent. The main focus of this research is to investigate the temperature related behavior shifts at a certain type of a rubber based seismic isolation system. This research is a complementary study to a recent experimental study on a newly developed seismic isolator called “Ball Rubber Bearing” (BRB). BRBs can ...

Quantitative electrostatic force measurement in AFM
JEFFERY, Steve; Oral, Ahmet; Pethica, John B. (2000-04-02)
We describe a method for measuring forces in the atomic force microscope (AFM), in which a small amplitude oscillation(similar to 1 Angstrom(p-p)) is applied to a stiff(similar to 40 N/m) cantilever below its first resonant frequency, and the force gradient is measured directly as a function of separation. We have used this instrument to measure electrostatic forces by applying an ac voltage between the tip and the sample, and observed a variation in contact potential difference with separation. We also sho...
Comparison of hypermedia learning and traditional instruction on knowledge acquisition and retention
Yıldırım, Zahide; Aksu, M (2001-03-01)
A comparison was made of hypermedia learning environments and traditional instruction in terms of contribution to declarative, procedural, and conditional knowledge acquisition and retention in a specific subject area through a pretest-posttest control-group design. Thirty-nine 9th-grade biology students were assigned to experimental (hypermedia learning environment) and control (traditional instruction) groups through a matched-pair technique. Both groups were given pre-, post-, and retention tests. Postte...
Analysis of kappa meson in light cone QCD sum rules
Baytemir, Gülsen; Yılmaz, Osman; Saraç, Yasemin; Department of Physics (2011)
In the present work some hadronic properties of the scalar κ meson are studied. Using the QCD sum rules approach, which is a nonperturbative method, the mass and the overlap amplitude of this meson are calculated. As well as the mass and the overlap amplitude, κ → K^+π^− decay is also studied. For this decay the coupling constant g_κK^+π^− is obtained using light cone QCD sum rules which is an extension of the QCD sum rules method. Moreover, the coupling constant is calculated using the experimental decay w...
