In the production of boron fibers using CVD technique, boron deposition and dichloroborane formation reactions take place in a reactor. Boron deposition reaction occurs at the surface while formation of dichloroborane is the result of both gas phase and surface reactions. A CSTR type of reactor was designed and constructed from stainless steel to investigate the gas phase reaction kinetics and kinetic parameters of boron fibers produced from the reaction of boron trichloride and hydrogen gases in a CVD reactor. The gases were heated by passing through the two pipes which were located into the ceramic furnace and they were mixed in the CSTR. The effluent gas mixture of the reactor was quenched by passing through a heat exchanger. An FT-IR spectrophotometer was connected to the heat exchanger outlet stream to perform on-line chemical analysis of the effluent gas mixture. Experiments were carried out at atmospheric pressure and a reactor temperature range of 300-600 ðC with different inlet reactant concentrations. The analysis of the FT-IR spectra indicated that the gas phase reaction and the surface reaction started at reactor temperatures above 170 ðC and 500ðC, respectively. It was concluded that reaction rate of the product increased with an increase in the inlet concentration of both reactants (BCl3 and H2) and with an increase in the reactor temperature. The gas phase reaction rate was expressed in terms of a th and b th orders with respect to the inlet concentrations of BCl3 and H2. The activation energy of the gas phase reaction, a and b were found to be 30.156 , 0.54 and 0.64, respectively. The correlation coefficient was 0.9969.

Gas phase reaction kinetics in boron fibre production
Firat, Fatih; Sezgi, Naime Aslı; Ozbelge, Hilmi O.; Doğu, Timur (2012-05-01)
In the production of boron fibres using the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique, boron deposition and dichloroborane formation reactions occurs simultaneously. Boron deposition reaction occurs at the surface, whereas the formation of dichloroborane is the result of both gas phase and surface reactions. A continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) type of reactor was designed to investigate the reaction kinetics and kinetic parameters in the gas phase reactions of boron trichloride and hydrogen. It was con...
Synthesis and characterization of copper phthalocyanine and tetracarboxamide copper phthalocyanine deposited mica-titania pigments
Topuz, Berna Burcu; Gündüz, Güngör; MAVİŞ, BORA; Colak, Uner (2013-01-01)
Combination pigments were synthesized by the deposition of copper phthalocyanine and tetracarboxamide copper phthalocyanine on a mica-titania pigment in dimethyl formamide solvent to improve color properties. The MIR and XRD analyses were performed to observe the crystal transformations of the pigments on the substrate. The stable beta form of copper phthalocyanine normally preferred in paint applications was obtained at 90 degrees C and 120 degrees C, while tetracarboxamide copper phthalocyanine remained a...
Synthesis oil based hyperbranched resins and their modification with melamine formaldehyde resins
Karakaya, Ceylan; Gündüz, Güngör; Department of Chemical Engineering (2005)
In this research hyperbranched resins containing fatty acid residues like alkyds were synthesized. Dipentaerythritol which has six hydroxyl groups was used as the core molecule, and it was transesterified with (i) castor oil, and (ii) a mixture of castor oil and linseed oil at 240°C in the presence of sodium hydroxide as catalyst. The resulting molecule, in either case, was then esterified with dimethylol propionic acid at 140°C in the presence of p-toluene sulfonic acid as catalyst. Melamine-formaldehyde r...
Characterization and enhancement of IR optical and tribological properties of DLC films synthesized by RF-PECVD
Taburoğlu, Vahit Eren; Özenbaş, Ahmet Macit; Akata Kurç, Burcu; Department of Micro and Nanotechnology (2017)
This thesis analyzes the hydrogenated amorphous diamond like carbon (a-DLC) films coated on aluminum substrates by the technique of plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). Effects of film thickness, hydrogen content and RF power on the tribology, optical characteristics and structure are observed and studied in detail. DLC films have compressive intrinsic stresses by default. Surface topography revealed by an interferometer shows that too low/high compressive stress is detrimental to the film. In...
Plasma Protein Adsorption and Platelet Adhesion on Heparin-Immobilized Polyurethane Films
Aksoy, Eda Ayse; Hasırcı, Vasıf Nejat; Hasırcı, Nesrin; Motta, Antonella; Fedel, Mariangela; Migliaresi, Claudio (2008-11-01)
Polyurethane surfaces were modified by covalent immobilization of different molecular weight heparins (fractionated Mw similar to 3000 Da, and unfractionated Mw similar to 17,000-19,000 Da) and examined by ESCA, AFM, and contact angle goniometer. The effect of these different surface-immobilized heparins on blood protein adsorption and on platelet adhesion, were examined after incubating the samples with platelet-poor and platelet-rich plasma. Protein adsorption kinetics was studied by electrophoresis and t...
