This study is an evaluation on the seismic behavior of the Nahrain Dam, which is located in Khorasan province in the central part of Iran. The finite element method is used for the dynamic analysis of the dam. Using a slope stability computer program, the critical slip surface near the crest of the dam and the yield acceleration corresponding to this slip surface are determined. Static analysis was completed by using the finite element computer program SAP90 and SAP2000 in order to determine the stress conditions within the body of the dam prior to earthquake. The stresses obtained from this analysis were used in the assessment of the dynamic material properties of the dam. Two near by actual earthquakes were modified and used as input motions of different magnitudes. At the next step, the harvested data was used as input data for the program TELDYN to perform dynamic analysis. Permanent displacements under the scenario base motions were calculated by using the Newmark̕s method.

Comparison of design codes for seismically isolated structures
Acar, Emre; Akyüz, Uğurhan; Department of Civil Engineering (2005)
This study presents information on the design procedure of seismic base isolation systems. Analysis of the seismic responses of isolated structures, which is oriented to give a clear understanding of the effect of base isolation on the nature of the structure; and discussion of various isolator types are involved in this work. Seismic isolation consists essentially of the installation of mechanisms, which decouple the structure, and its contents, from potentially damaging earthquake induced ground motions. ...
Some observations on the seismic behaviour of traditional timber structures in Turkey
Akan, Aslı Er; Ünay, Ali İhsan; Department of Architecture (2004)
This thesis is about behaviour of traditional timber structures under lateral loads in Turkey. The timber-framed houses are the products of cultural heritage of people who live in Anatolia. These structures have performed well in earthquakes throughout the history. As a result, this study intends to present the observations on the seismic behaviours of traditional timber buildings with the help of computer-generated models. In this thesis, the general characteristics of timber are examined, the earthquake p...
Settlement behaviour of concrete faced rockfill dams : a case study
Özkuzukıran, Rıza Savaş; Özkan, M. Yener; Department of Civil Engineering (2005)
In this study settlement behaviour of Kürtün dam, which is the first concrete faced rockfill dam in Turkey, is investigated. Two dimensional plane strain finite element analyses are carried out in order to determine the total stresses and displacements during construction and reservoir filling conditions. Hardening soil model is used in order to represent the non-linear, inelastic and stress dependent behaviour of rockfill material. Material model parameters are selected mainly referring to the previous stu...
Modeling and development of a groundwater management plan for Ulubey aquifer system, Uşak-Turkey
Ünsal Erdemli, Burcu; Yazıcıgil, Hasan; Department of Geological Engineering (2008)
The purpose of this study is the characterization and modeling of Ulubey aquifer system which serves as an important water supply for Uşak province located in inner parts of the Aegean Region in Turkey. In recent years, growing population, accelarating industrial activities and on the contrary decreasing rainfall and contamination of the surface water resources made groundwater indispensable to meet domestic, agricultural and industrial water demands of Uşak province. All these facts necessitate the develop...
An evaluation study on instrumentation system of Cindere dam
Sezgin , Özgün İlke; Yanmaz, Ali Melih; Department of Civil Engineering (2008)
In this study, the first hardfill dam in Turkey, Cindere Dam, is evaluated regarding current and alternative measurement systems in detail. Cindere Dam is a notable project, especially with its height as an example of hardfill dam, not only in Turkey but also in the world. First, the current instrumentation system of Cindere Dam is evaluated as a whole with reference to the parameters measured, instruments and data acquisition system. Second, an alternative instrumentation system is developed by using addit...
