In this study settlement behaviour of Kürtün dam, which is the first concrete faced rockfill dam in Turkey, is investigated. Two dimensional plane strain finite element analyses are carried out in order to determine the total stresses and displacements during construction and reservoir filling conditions. Hardening soil model is used in order to represent the non-linear, inelastic and stress dependent behaviour of rockfill material. Material model parameters are selected mainly referring to the previous studies on the dams consisting of similar materials. Calculated stresses and settlements are compared with the observed values and in general, they were found to be in good agreement for the construction stages. It is seen that, due to the relatively narrow valley and steep abutment slopes, arching is a significant parameter as far as the stresses and settlements are concerned. For the reservoir impounding condition, calculated settlements were found to be slightly larger than the observed values, which may indicate that during the reservoir impounding, the rockfill embankment behaves in a stiffer manner as compared to that of during construction stages.

An analysis of deformation behaviorof Muratlı asphalt faced rockfill dam
Ünsever, Yeşim Sema; Özkan, M. Yener; Department of Civil Engineering (2007)
In this study, settlement and seepage behavior of Muratlı Dam, which is the first asphalt faced rockfill dam in Turkey, is investigated for the “end of construction” and “reservoir impoundment” loading conditions. Two dimensional plane strain finite element analyses are carried out in order to determine the total stresses, displacements and pore water pressures. Hardening soil model is used in order to represent the non-linear, inelastic and stress dependent behavior of rockfill material. Material model par...
Beneficiation of Himmetoglu oil shale by flotation as a solid fuel substitute. Part 2. Process optimization by a statistical approach
Altun, Naci Emre; Hwang, HY; Bagci, AS (American Chemical Society (ACS), 2006-01-01)
The effects of the important flotation parameters on the cleaning process of the Himmetoglu oil shale from Turkey were investigated. The individual and multiple interaction effects of conditioning time, flotation time, pulp density, particle size, and frother dosage were determined using statistical analysis and factorial design of experiments. The influence of these parameters on the cleaning performance were evaluated in terms of ash yield, calorific value, and combustible recovery of the concentrates. XR...
Environmental geological investigations at the Van open dump site, southeastern Turkey
Akgün, Haluk (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2000-04-01)
This study evaluates the geological, hydrogeological and hydrological conditions at the I waste dump site of the Van municipality in eastern Anatolia, Turkey. A geological map and a three-dimensional view of the project site have prepared. All lithological units exposed at and near the dump site have been determined and their boundary relationships identified. Drainage basin characteristics of the dump site along with the water bearing properties of different lithological units have been assessed. For the r...
Hydroelectric power potential and its use in Turkey
Taşdemiroğlu, Erol (Elsevier BV, 1988-7)
Hydroelectric development in Turkey is briefly reviewed. The results of estimates of gross and economically exploitable hydroelectric power potentials are compared. Dam sites and their order for construction are identified. Present and future developments in the power sector are analyzed and projections are given for electricity consumption and production to the year 2010. Hydraulic, thermal and nuclear contributions to total electricity generation are discussed. Finally, problems associated with hydroelect...
Slope stability assessment of a re-activated landslide on the Artvin-Savsat junction of a provincial road in Meydancik, Turkey
Topsakal, Ebru; Topal, Tamer (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2015-03-01)
The purpose of this study is to determine the most suitable remediation techniques for an active landslide area in Turkey, using a geological engineering assessment of a re-activated landslide that occurred during the construction of the Artvin-Savsat Junction on the Meydancik Provincial Road, at Km: 12 + 200. For this, the geotechnical parameters of the mobilized geological material-which is colluvium along the sliding surface-were determined by back analyses of the landslide at three geological sections. ...
