Recently, very large collections of images and videos have grown rapidly. In parallel with this growth, content-based retrieval and querying the indexed collections are required to access visual information. Three main components of the visual information are color, texture and shape. In this thesis, an XML based content-based image retrieval system is presented that combines three visual descriptors of MPEG-7 and measures similarity of images by applying a distance function. An XML database is used for storing these three descriptors. The system is also extended to support high dimensional indexing for efficient search and retrieval from its XML database. To do this, an index structure, called M-Tree, is implemented which uses weighted Euclidean distance function for similarity measure. Ordered Weighted Aggregation (OWA) operators are used to define the weights of the distance function and to combine three features̕ distance functions into one. The system supports nearest neighbor queries and three types of fuzzy queries; feature-based, image-based and color-based queries. Also it is shown through experimental results and analysis of retrieval effectiveness of querying that the content-based retrieval system is effective in terms of retrieval and scalability.

Improving interactive classification of satellite image content
Tekkaya, Gökhan; Atalay, Mehmet Volkan; Department of Computer Engineering (2007)
Interactive classication is an attractive alternative and complementary for automatic classication of satellite image content, since the subject is visual and there are not yet powerful computational features corresponding to the sought visual features. In this study, we improve our previous attempt by building a more stable software system with better capabilities for interactive classication of the content of satellite images. The system allows user to indicate a few number of image regions that contain a...
Interactive volume rendering for medical images
Orhun, Koray; Mumcuoğlu, Ünal Erkan; Department of Information Systems (2004)
Volume rendering is one of the branches of scientific visualization. Its popularity has grown in the recent years, and due to the increase in the computation speed of the graphics hardware of the desktop systems, became more and more accessible. Visualizing volumetric datasets using volume rendering technique requires a large amount of trilinear interpolation operations that are computationally expensive. This situation used to restrict volume rendering methods to be used only in high-end graphics workstati...
A java toolbox for wavelet based image denoising
Tuncer, Güney; Karslıoğlu, Mahmut Onur; Department of Geodetic and Geographical Information Technologies (2006)
Wavelet methods for image denoising have became widespread for the last decade. The effectiveness of this denoising scheme is influenced by many factors. Highlights can be listed as choosing of wavelet used, the threshold determination and transform level selection for thresholding. For threshold calculation one of the classical solutions is Wiener filter as a linear estimator. Another one is VisuShrink using global thresholding for nonlinear area. The purpose of this work is to develop a Java toolbox which...
An automated conversion of temporal databases into XML with fuzziness option
Işıkman, Ömer Özgün; Polat, Faruk; Özyer, Tansel; Department of Computer Engineering (2010)
The importance of incorporating time in databases has been well realized by the community and time varying databases have been extensively studied by researchers. The main idea is to model up-to-date changes to data since it became available. Time information is mostly overlaid on the traditional databases, and extensional time dimension helps in inquiring or past data; this all becomes possible only once the idea is realized and favored by commercial database management systems. Unfortunately, one disadvan...
Fuzzy spatial data cube construction and its use in association rule mining
Işık, Narin; Yazıcı, Adnan; Department of Computer Engineering (2005)
The popularity of spatial databases increases since the amount of the spatial data that need to be handled has increased by the use of digital maps, images from satellites, video cameras, medical equipment, sensor networks, etc. Spatial data are difficult to examine and extract interesting knowledge; hence, applications that assist decision-making about spatial data like weather forecasting, traffic supervision, mobile communication, etc. have been introduced. In this thesis, more natural and precise knowle...
