Synthesis of ferrocenyl quinones and polyquinanes

Eralp, Tuğçe
With the discovery of antitumor activity of ferrocene derivatives, research on new ferrocene derivatives have gained importance. For this purpose, we have investigated the synthesis of ferrocenyl quinones starting from squaric acid. Several quinone derivatives are known to have antitumor and antibiotic activities. In this research, by combining ferrocene and quinone moieties, we have targeted ferrocenyl quinones which are supposed to have enhanced potential antitumor activity. Thermolysis of ferrocenyl-substituted 4-alkynyl cyclobutenones, which have been prepared from ferrocenyl cyclobutenediones and alkynyllithiums, leads to the formation of ferrocenyl quinones and besides also cyclopentendiones are observed. Ferrocenyl cyclobutenediones have been prepared from known cyclobutenediones by nucleophilic addition of ferrocenyllithium followed by hydrolysis. A mechanism for the formation of ferrocenyl substituted quinones, involving first electrocyclic ring opening of alkynyl substituted cyclobutenone to ketene intermediate and then ring closure, has been proposed. Polyquinanes are widely found in nature and proved to have biological activity such as antibiotic activity. For the synthesis of ferrocenyl polyquinanes, starting from squaric acid, ferrocenyl substituted cyclobutenediones were prepared and reacted with alkenyllithium, and hydrolyzed to afford ferrocenyl substituted polyquinanes. A mechanism has been proposed that involves first the formation of cis- and trans-divinyl substituted cyclobutenes that produce cyclooctatriene-dienolate, upon hydrolysis of this dienolate, aldol-type transannular ring closure reaction takes place, producing polyquinanes.

This microreview describes recent advances in asymmetric synthesis of aziridine derivatives, which have been published over the last two years.
Synthesis of novel chiral thiourea derivatives and their applications, synthesis of some hdac inhibitors, addition of acyl phosphonates to ethylcyanoformate
Sağlam, Gülüzar; Demir, Ayhan Sıtkı; Department of Chemistry (2008)
The thiourea derivatives have become a main focus of research in asymmetric synthesis as an organocatalyst in recent years. In the first part, the thiourea catalysts are synthesized starting from easily available L-tartaric acid and application of the catalysts to some addition reactions showed no significant asymmetric induction. A number of HDAC inhibitors have been developed as anti-cancer agent at the present time.In the second part, some aryl butenoic acid derivatives are synthesized as HDAC inhibitors...
Synthesis of bicyclo[2.2.2]octane-2,3,5,6,7,8 hexols (Bishomoinositols) as glycosidase inhibitors
Baran, Arif; Guenel, Aslihan; Balcı, Metin (American Chemical Society (ACS), 2008-06-20)
For the construction of the bicyclo[2.2.2] octane skeleton, 2,2-dimethyl-3a,7a-dihydro-1,3-benzodioxole was reacted with vinylene carbonate to give two isomeric cycloadditon products having the bicyclo[2.2.2]octane skeleton. Hydrolysis of the ketal ring and the opening of the carbonate functionality, followed by hydroxylation of the remaining double bond resulted in the formation of a symmetrical hexol. Epoxidation of the double bond in the cycloaddition products and the subsequent ring-opening reactions pr...
Synthesis of Ferrocenyl Substituted Aziridines
Zeytinci, Serhat; Doğan, Özdemir; Department of Chemistry (2006)
Immobilization of tyrosinase enzyme was performed in the matrices obtained via copolymerization of terephthalic acid bis-(2-thiophen-3-yl ethyl) ester (TATE) with pyrrole. During electrochemical polymerization of pyrrole, enzyme molecules were entrapped in the copolymer matrice. Activity measurements were performed by using Besthorn̕s Hydrazone method which includes spectrophotometric analysis of quinones produced by the enzyme. Enzyme electrodes were characterized in terms of maximum reaction rate (Vmax) a...
Synthesis and enzymatic resolution of various cyclopentenoid and cyclohexenoid type compounds
İyigün, Çiğdem; Tanyeli, Cihangir; Department of Chemistry (2005)
The aim of this thesis is to synthesize enantiomerically enriched cyclopentenoid and cyclohexenoid type of compounds with quaternary carbon stereocenters that are the simplest precursors of the complex natural products. The first part of the study involves the preparation of ?'-acetoxy ?'-substituted ?,β-unsaturated cyclic ketones. Methylation, ethylation, benzylation and allylation of cyclohexenone and cyclopentenone derivatives are performed. Then, these compounds are regioselectively oxidized at the ?'-p...
