The main goal of this thesis is the development of a novel methodology to generate creative solutions at functional level for design tasks without binding solution spaces with designers̕ individual experiences and prejudices. For this purpose, an evolutionary methodology for the conceptual design of engineering products has been proposed. This methodology performs evaluation, combination and modification of the existing solutions repetitively to generate new solution alternatives. Therefore, initially a representation scheme, which is generic enough to cover all alternatives in solution domain, has been defined. Following that, the evolutionary operations have been defined and two evaluation metrics have been proposed. Finally, the computer implementation of the developed theory has been performed. The test-runs of developed software resulted in creative alternatives for the design task. Consequently, the evolutionary design methodology presents a systematic design approach for less experienced or inexperienced designers and establishes a base for experienced designers to conceive many other solution alternatives beyond their experiences.

3-D humanoid gait simulation using an optimal predictive control
Özyurt, Gökhan; Özgören, Mustafa Kemal; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2005)
In this thesis, the walking of a humanoid system is simulated applying an optimal predictive control algorithm. The simulation is built using Matlab and Simulink softwares. Four separate physical models are developed to represent the single support and the double support phases of a full gait cycle. The models are three dimensional and their properties are analogous to the human̕s. In this connection, the foot models in the double support phases include an additional joint which connects the toe to the foot...
An mpeg-7 video database system for content-based management and retrieval
Çelik, Çiğdem; Çiçekli, Fehime Nihan; Department of Computer Engineering (2005)
A video data model that allows efficient and effective representation and querying of spatio-temporal properties of objects has been previously developed. The data model is focused on the semantic content of video streams. Objects, events, activities performed by objects are the main interests of the model. The model supports fuzzy spatial queries including querying spatial relationships between objects and querying the trajectories of objects. In this thesis, this work is used as a basis for the developmen...
Socio-psychological dimensions of the participatory processes : in the case of the local government and NGO cooperation in participatory democracy project
Kulözü, Neslihan; Ataöv Demirkan, Anlı; Tekeli, İlhan; Department of City and Regional Planning (2012)
The transformation of the planning paradigm from rational comprehensive planning to participatory planning is commonly explained by the shift from instrumental rationality to communicative rationality. Based on communicative rationality, participatory planning approach has its own assumptions. One of the assumptions and pre-conditions of the realization of participatory planning practices is consensus-building. However, because of context-dependency of participatory planning processes, building consensus at...
A Petri Net-based inference network for design automation under nondeterminism applied to mechatronic systems
Erden, Zühal; Erkmen, Aydan Müşerref; Erden, Abdülkadir (1998-09-11)
This paper introduces the completed part of an ongoing research, in which a Petri Net-based design inference network is developed for the representation and analysis of the functions and their interrelationships through information flow for the conceptual design stage of mechatronic systems in order to facilitate design automation. The theoretical framework behind the network is based on transition of Hybrid Automata into Petri Nets and application of this framework is introduced by a mechatronic design exa...
University campus design in spatial, social and political considerations
Ilgaz, Berkay; Barlas, Mehmet Adnan; Urban Design in City and Regional Planning Department (2014)
The subject matter of this research is university campus design, and it is discussed in a wider framework of some of the general concerns of the field of urban design. In this study the concept ‘campus’ is not only taken as model of university settlement, but in a broader sense, any type of space on which higher education institutions are found. The problem is defined in both a universal scale of the general issues and practices developed in the post industrial cities, and the case of Turkish higher educati...
