Usability is regarded as one of the most important factors that consumers consider while purchasing products, however it is difficult to judge usability unless the user actually uses the product. Perceived usability is influential for consumers when identifying a product as usable and purchasing it. This study concentrates on the relationship between visual appeal and perceived usability especially for consumer products. The influence of visual appeal on perceived usability for consumer products is scrutinized through the findings of an empirical study besides a broad literature review. In the literature, there are many studies -mostly dealing with the HCI products- claiming that visual appeal affects users’ perceptions of usability. However, the empirical study results indicate that the relationship between visual appeal and perceived usability is not clear for consumer products as the relationship declared in the literature.

The influence of product appearance on perceived product quality in reference to washing machines
Veyisoğlu, Ahmet Burak; Hasdoğan, Gülay Fatma; Department of Industrial Design (2010)
Product quality is regarded as one of the most important factors that consumers consider while purchasing products. However, contrary to objective quality, perceived product quality includes consumer's judgment about the overall superiority or excellence of a product. This study mainly concentrates on the relationship between product appearance and perceived product quality especially for durable goods. The definitions of product quality and perceived product quality are reviewed to explain different dimens...
Evaluation of Construct Elicitation as a Research Method to Obtain Design-Relevant Data from Children
Süner, Sedef ; Erbuğ, Çiğdem (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 2016-8-10)
Understanding user requirements and how users give meaning to their own experiences related to products is a significant input in the design of products that are acceptable to the target users. This issue becomes more important when designing for children due to our adult preconceptions about what they can and cannot do, and what they like or do not like. Although incorporating children's input into design process has been well-acknowledged in research practices, the dominant tendency is to involve children...
The contribution of user-centered design to consumer packages
Kesercioğlu, Burçin; Erbuğ, Çiğdem; Department of Industrial Design (2005)
End-users often complain about usability and safety problems in consumer packages. This study shows that these issues are an obstacle to the achievement of user satisfaction and to gain a competitive advantage in the market. To this end, a case study on food and beverage packages was done in order to identify and analyze these usability and safety problems based on the lifetime phases of packages in which end-users are involved. The study revealed that safety, clarity, legibility, visibility, storability, o...
The role of design attributes in shaping users’ value assignment: the case of portable digital audio players
Gedikli, Damla; Hasdoğan, Gülay Fatma; Department of Industrial Design (2011)
Users evaluate and assign value to products regarding several factors, one of which is design attributes. The attributes can provide certain consequences, which can, in turn, serve to users’ desires or ultimate goals in life. Value is attributed regarding the desirability of the sequential chain of attributes, consequences and goals. Considering value creation for the users as designers’ main responsibility; they should focus on how these chains are shaped while designing products. This study mainly concent...
Factors influencing new product acceptance: a study on military context
Şimşek, Diler; Ünlü, Canan Emine; Department of Industrial Design (2008)
Attitudes of users towards new Information Technology products have been the matters of consumer research studies. Factors that affect user behavior in terms of IT acceptance have been modeled by different researchers with an attempt to predict the actual usage. This study aims to analyze these factors and their significance in military context. One of the robust models, namely Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) is used as the study model with required modifications in order to augme...
