In this study, structural vulnerability of reinforced concrete frame structures by considering the countryspecific characteristics is investigated to manage the earthquake risk and to develop strategies for disaster mitigation. Lowrise and midrise reinforced concrete structures, which constitute approximately 75% of the total building stock in Turkey, are focused in this fragilitybased assessment. The seismic design of 3, 5, 7 and 9story reinforced concrete frame structures are carried out according to the current earthquake codes and two dimensional analytical models are formed accordingly. The uncertainty in material variability is taken into account in the formation of structural simulations. Frame structures are categorized as poor, typical or superior according to the specific characteristics of construction practice and the observed seismic performance after major earthquakes in Turkey. The demand statistics in terms of maximum interstory drift ratio are obtained for different sets of ground motion records. The capacity is determined in terms of limit states and the corresponding fragility curves are obtained from the probability of exceeding each limit state for different levels of ground shaking. The results are promising in the sense that the inherent structural deficiencies are reflected in the final fragility functions. Consequently, this study provides a reliable fragilitybased database for earthquake damage and loss estimation of reinforced concrete building stock in urban areas of Turkey.

Fragility based assessment of lowrise and midrise reinforced concrete frame buildings in turkey using Düzce damage database
Özün, Ahsen; Erberik, Murat Altuğ; Department of Civil Engineering (2007)
In this study, the seismic fragility assessment of low-rise and mid-rise reinforced concrete frame buildings which constitute approximately 75 % of the total building stock in Turkey is investigated to quantify the earthquake risk. The inventory used in this study is selected from Düzce damage database which was compiled after the devastating 1999 earthquakes in the Marmara region. These buildings are not designed according to the current code regulations and the supervision in the construction phase is not...
Analytical modeling of reinforced concrete beam-to-column connections
Ünal, Mehmet; Burak Bakır, Burcu; Department of Civil Engineering (2010)
Prior studies indicated that beam-to-column connections of reinforced concrete (RC) moment resisting frame structures experience considerable deformations under earthquake loading and these deformations have a major contribution to story drift of the building. In current analysis and design applications, however, the connection regions are generally modeled as rigid zones and the inelastic behavior of the joint is not taken into account. This assumption gives rise to an underestimation of the story drifts a...
Seismic vulnerability, behavior and design of tunnel form building structures
Balkaya, C; Kalkan, E (Elsevier BV, 2004-12-01)
Multi-story reinforced concrete tunnel form buildings are one of the common structural types in regions prone to high seismic risk due to the buildings inherent earthquake resistance and ease of construction. Despite their good performance during earthquakes in 1999 in Turkey, and abundance of such structures scattered worldwide, current seismic codes and design provisions provide insufficient guidelines for their seismic design. As a compensatory measure, a series of modal and nonlinear static analyses are...
Low cycle fatigue effects in the damage caused by the Marmara earthquake of August 17, 1999
Acar, Fikri; Gülkan, Polat; Department of Civil Engineering (2005)
This study mainly addresses the problem of estimating the prior earthquake damage on the response of reinforced concrete structures to future earthquakes. The motivation has arisen from the heavy damages or collapses that occurred in many reinforced concrete structures following two major earthquakes that recently occurred in the Marmara Region, Turkey. The analysis tool employed for this purpose is the package named IDARC2D. Deterioration parameters of IDARC's hysteretic model have been calibrated using a ...
Evaluation of seismic response modification factors for steel frames by non-linear analysis
Bakır, Serhan; Yılmaz, Çetin; Department of Civil Engineering (2006)
In this study steel framing systems are investigated with regards to their lateral load carrying capacity and in this context seismic response modification factors of individual systems are analyzed. Numerous load resisting layouts, such as different bracing systems and un-braced moment resisting frames with various bay and story configurations are designed and evaluated in a parametric fashion. Three types of beam to column connection conditions are incorporated in evaluation process. Frames, designed acco...
