Assessment of durability criteria of the armourstones used in Mersin and Kumkuyu harbors based on their site and laboratory performances

Ertaş, Burcu
Breakwaters are constructed in coastal areas to protect coastal engineering structures from wave actions. Due to economic reasons, natural stones (armourstone) are very frequently used for the constructions of the breakwaters. Considering the functions of the stones at different zones of the breakwaters, various sizes with variable properties of the armourstones are used in breakwaters.Deterioration of armourstones with time in the form of abrasion and disintegration may end up with the damage of the engineering structures. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the long-term performance and quality of the armourstones, which should be sound and durable. In this thesis, the properties of four limestones taken from two quarries with a known site performances as armourstones in Mersin and Kumkuyu harbors are studied .The site performances and durability of the limestones are compared with the field measurements and laboratory works. For this purpose, the material and mass properties of the limestones are studied. Thus, the information obtained is used to assess long-term durability of the armourstones. The longterm performaces of the Degirmençayı and Tirtar upper level limestones are observed to be good whereas it is rather poor for the Tirtar middle and lower level limestones. Comparison between the predicted and observed durabilities of the armourstones indicated that CIRIA/CUR, RDId, RERS, and wet to dry strength ratio give better results based on their field performances. However, the prediction of the durability of the limestones is poor in case RDIs, average pore diameter, and saturation coefficient are used.

Assessment of slope stability for a segment (km: 25+600-26+000) of Antalya-Korkuteli highway
Arıkan, Huriye Aslı; Topal, Tamer; Department of Geological Engineering (2010)
The cut slopes at a segment between Km 25+600 and 26+000 of the Antalya-Burdur Breakaway-Korkuteli State Road to be newly constructed have slope instability problems due to the existence of highly jointed limestone. The purpose of this study is to investigate the engineering geological properties of the units exposed at three cut slopes, to assess stability of the cut slopes, and to recommend remedial measures for the problematic sections. In this respect, both field and laboratory studies have been carried...
Quality assessment of the armourstones for some Black Sea rubble mound breakwaters
Özden, Utku Ahmet; Topal, Tamer; Department of Geological Engineering (2006)
Black Sea coast line is a hazardous region especially in winter due to the dominant wave action. Therefore, rubble mound breakwaters used as ship shelters are vital structures especially for the fishermen. Construction of the breakwater requires good quality durable armourstones. Due to the nature of the rubble mound breakwaters, armourstones having various sizes and types are used in the construction of these structures. The deterioration of these armourstones with time in the form of abrasion and disinteg...
Analysis of Plio-Quaternary deep marine systems and their evolution in a compressional tectonic regime, Eastern Black Sea Basin
Sipahioglu, N. O.; Karahanoğlu, Nurkan; Altıner, Demir (Elsevier BV, 2013-05-01)
Facies architecture of submarine fans and channel-levee complexes in the Eastern Black Sea Basin and their evolution from the Late Miocene until the present day are studied using a three-dimensional seismic data set covering an area of approximately 1161 km(2). The interpretation of the observations reveals the outcome of the changing interplay between rate of sedimentation and compressional tectonism in the area through time.
Modeling of mogan and eymir lakes aquifer system
Yağbasan, Özlem; Yazıcıgil, Hasan; Department of Geological Engineering (2007)
Mogan and Eymir Lakes, located 20 km south of Ankara, are important aesthetic, recreational, and ecological resources. Dikilitaş and İkizce reservoirs, constructed on upstream surface waters, are two man-made structures in the basin encompassing an area of 985 km2. The purpose of this study is (1) to quantify groundwater components in lakes’ budgets, (2) to assess the potential impacts of upstream reservoirs on lake levels, and (3) to determine effects of potential climatic change on lakes and groundwater l...
Engineering geological investigations along the Iliksu Tunnels, Alanya, southern turkey
Koçkar, Mustafa Kerem; Akgün, Haluk (Elsevier BV, 2003-03-01)
The main objective of this study is to assess the engineering geological characteristics of the rock mass and to suggest appropriate support recommendations along the two autoroad tunnel projects, named as Iliksu 1 and lliksu 2, which are located along the Antalya-Alanya Highway. The study area consists of pelitic schist and calc schist overlain by a thick sequence of recrystallized limestone and an intercalation of pelitic schist, calc schist and graphite schist. The tunnel ground support types and categor...
