Conservation of historic buildings requires comprehensive and correct information of buildings to be analyzed in conservation decision making process in a systematic and rational approach. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are advantageous in such cases which can be defined as computer based systems for handling geographical and spatial data. GIS have the potential to support the conservation decision making process with their storing, analyzing and monitoring capabilities. Therefore, information systems like GIS can be seen as a potential significant instrument for dealing with the conservation projects. This thesis aims to analyze the transformation process of the data collected in conservation process into practical information in order to adapt this process to a spatial information system. In this context, use of Geographical Information Systems is tested in the process of historic building conservation on spatial information system designed for Doğanlar Church İzmir chosen as the case study. Hence the advantages and disadvantages of local information systems in conservation decision making process of historic buildings can be criticized.

On the concept of "field" in architectural theory and practice
Kuzlu, Emre; Aközer, Emel; Department of Architecture (2004)
This study aims at explaining the significance of the أfieldؤ concept in contemporary architecture and urbanism, in reference to the technical definitions of the term in different disciplines. In this context, it investigates the concepts of أfieldؤ in physics, psychology, art theory and criticism. It highlights the reinterpretation of the أfieldؤ concept in physics by eminent Gestalt psychologists, and its consequences for architecture and urbanism. Starting from the definitions of the concept of أfieldؤ b...
A new approach for defining the conservation status of early Republican architecture, case study : primary school buildings in İzmir
Kul, Fatma Nurşen; Madran, Emre; Department of Architecture (2010)
International discussions on the conservation of the twentieth-century architectural heritage emphasize the diversity of the whole of the built environment of the entire century, rather than limiting consideration to canonic examples of the architectural historiography during the identification and assessment of the properties to be conserved. In contrast to this international holistic and inclusive approach, the approach to the identification and assessment of the properties in Turkey has in general been s...
Architecture as an apparatus of “immortalization and glorification”: a critical analysis of wittgensteinian [true] architecture
Turan, Oktay; Cengizkan, Ali; Department of Architecture (2007)
This study is an inquiry into architecture understood as an apparatus of immortalization and glorification by means of a dialectic formulation on the architecture of the synecdochic Interwar (angst) Period (1919-1939) based on the assumptions of Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951). It is claimed that a dialectical relation between Wittgenstein and his contemporaries may contribute to the understanding of the conceptions regarding ideal of [true] architecture itself. The thesis suggests that these assumptions ma...
Assessing thermal performance of office building envelopes : a case study on energy efficiency
Sürmeli, Ayşe Neşen; Elias Özkan, Soofia Tahira; Department of Building Science in Architecture (2004)
In this study, the energy conservation potential of selected retrofitting interventions on an office building were investigated, on the basis of which some rational strategies for the improvement of building envelopes in terms of energy, environment and comfort design were proposed. Examined were various measures on envelope constructions that can be retrofitted to existing buildings. By using simulation techniques, the effectiveness of such measures in reducing energy consumption and environmental threat w...
Exhibitions as the medium of architectural reproduction "modern architecture: international exhibition"
Tabibi, Baharak; Gür, Berin Fatma; Department of Architecture (2005)
This thesis studies the influential role of architectural exhibitions in shaping and directing architectural discourses. The study accepts architectural exhibitions and associated publications as the أcritical actؤ of architecture, in which (the work of) architecture is interpreted, reproduced and publicized. The main focus of this thesis is أModern Architecture: International Exhibition,ؤ held in 1932 at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). This particular exhibition is a significant historical event, which of...
