This study has aimed to examine effectiveness of the peer instruction on sixth grade students’ science achievement, attitudes concerning current electricity and retention rates of what has already learnt about current electricity as compared to the conventional instruction. The study was conducted during 2005-2006 spring semester with 121 students from the four classes of two elementary schools in the central Yenimahalle district of Ankara. Current Electricity Achievement Test (CEAT) and Attitude toward Current Electricity Scale (ATCES) were administered as pretest to all groups in order to determine students’ level of prior knowledge and level of interest toward the subject before the treatment, respectively. Then, treatment started in experimental group. It continued three weeks throughout the current electricity subject. While experimental group implementing the peer instruction, control group continued with their conventional lecturing. Immediately after three weeks, students both in control and experimental groups were post tested with the same test and scale. Moreover, three months after the post tests, delayed post test on the CEAT was also administered to both experimental and control groups. The data obtained from the administration of tests and scales were analyzed by the statistical techniques of MANCOVA; follow up ANCOVA’s and repeated measure ANCOVA. Results of the statistical analysis indicated that the peer instruction has significantly greater effect on students’ science achievement and retention rates as compared to the conventional instruction. However, the statistical analysis failed to show a significant difference between the attitudes of students instructed by the peer instruction and the conventional instruction.

The effect of problem based learning instruction on 7th grade students’ science achievement, attitude toward science and scientific process skills
Serin, Gökhan; Eryılmaz, Ali; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2009)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of instruction based on problem-based learning (PBL) on 7th grade students’ science achievement, attitude toward science course and scientific process skills. The study was conducted in May 2007 with 141 students and four science teachers from four middle schools in Gölbası district of Ankara. A total of eight classes were participated in the study. Four of them were assigned randomly to control group and four of them were assigned randomly to experimen...
The effects of hands-on activity enriched instruction on sixth grade students' achievement and attitudes towards science
Türk, Özlem; Çakıroğlu, Özlem; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2005)
This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of hands-on activity enriched instruction on sixth grade students̕ achievement (on sense organs) and attitudes towards science. In this study, Science Achievement Test and Science Attitude Scale were used to assess students̕ achievement on sense organs and students̕ attitudes towards science, respectively. Also, hands-on activities about sense organs were prepared. This study was conducted with 2 teachers and 4 classes and total of 140 sixth grade students i...
The effect of explicit embedded reflective instruction on nature of science understandings, scientific literacy levels and achievement on cell unit
Köksal, Mustafa Serdar; Geban, Ömer; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2010)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of explicit-embedded-reflective (EER) instruction on nature of science (NOS) understandings, scientific literacy levels and cell content knowledge of the ninth grade advanced science students. This study has been conducted with 71 students by using non-equivalent quasi-experimental design. In the treatment groups, the EER teaching has been conducted while NOS instruction in the comparison group for the same time interval has been done by lecture,...
The effects of activities based on role-play on ninth grade students' achievement and attitudes towards simple electric circuits
Küçüker, Yadikar(Tunçer); Eryılmaz, Ali; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2004)
This study intented to investigate the effects of activities based on role-play on ninth grade students̕ achievement and attitudes at simple electric circuits. In this study, Physics Achievement Test was developed to evaluate students̕ achievement on simple electric circuits and role-play activities about simple electric circuits were prepared. In addition, Physics Attitude Scale was administered to explore students̕ attitude towards physics. The present study was conducted at one of the high schools in Aci...
Explaining the relationship between high school students' selected affective characterstics and their physics achievement
Doğan Tekiroğlu, Özlem; Eryılmaz, Ali; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2005)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between some of selected affective characteristics of high school students related to physics lesson and their physics achievement in electricity concept. These affective characteristics of the students includes their interest in physics, importance of physics, enjoyment of extra-curricular activities related to physics, physics course anxiety, physics test anxiety, achievement motivation in physics, student motivation in physics, self-efficacy in...
