Development of a material cutting model for haptic rendering applications

Üner, Görkem
Haptic devices and haptic rendering is an important topic in the burgeoning field of virtual reality applications. In this thesis, I describe the design and implementation of a cutting force model integrating a haptic device, the PHANToM, with a high powered computer. My goal was to build a six degree of freedom force model to allow user to interact with three dimensional deformable objects. Methods for haptic rendering including graphical rendering, collision detection and force feedback are illustrated, implementation of haptic rendering system is introduced, and application is evaluated to explore the effectiveness of the system.

Prediction of slip in cable-drum systems using structured neural networks
KILIÇ, Ergin; Dölen, Melik (SAGE Publications, 2014-02-01)
This study focuses on the slip prediction in a cable-drum system using artificial neural networks for the prospect of developing linear motion sensing scheme for such mechanisms. Both feed-forward and recurrent-type artificial neural network architectures are considered to capture the slip dynamics of cable-drum mechanisms. In the article, the network development is presented in a progressive (step-by-step) fashion for the purpose of not only making the design process transparent to the readers but also hig...
A monolithic three-axis micro-g micromachined silicon capacitive accelerometer
Chae, J; Külah, Haluk; Najafi, K (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2005-04-01)
A monolithic three-axis micro-g resolution silicon capacitive accelerometer system utilizing a combined surface and bulk micromachining technology is demonstrated. The accelerometer system consists of three individual single-axis accelerometers fabricated in a single substrate using a common fabrication process. All three devices have 475-mu m-thick silicon proof-mass, large area polysilicon sense/drive electrodes, and small sensing gap (< 1.5 mu m) formed by a sacrificial oxide layer. The fabricated accele...
Vibration-based damage identification in beam-like composite laminates by using artificial neural networks
Şahin, Melin (SAGE Publications, 2003-01-01)
This paper investigates the effectiveness of the combination of global (changes in natural frequencies) and local (curvature mode shapes) vibration-based analysis data as input for artificial neural networks (ANNs) for location and severity prediction of damage in fibre-reinforced plastic laminates. A finite element analysis tool has been used to obtain the dynamic characteristics of intact and damaged cantilever composite beams for the first three natural modes. Different damage scenarios have been introdu...
Development of a micro-fabrication process simulator for micro-electro-mechanical systems(mems)
Yıldırım, Alper; Dölen, Melik; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2005)
The aim of this study is to devise a computer simulation tool, which will speed-up the design of Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems by providing the results of the micro-fabrication processes in advance. Anisotropic etching along with isotropic etching of silicon wafers are to be simulated in this environment. Similarly, additive processes like doping and material deposition could be simulated by means of a Cellular Automata based algorithm along with the use of OpenGL library functions. Equipped with an inte...
Flexible multibody dynamic modeling and simulation of rhex hexapod robot with half circular compliant legs
Oral, Gökhan; Yazıcıoğlu, Yiğit; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2008)
The focus of interest in this study is the RHex robot, which is a hexapod robot that is capable of locomotion over rugged, fractured terrain through statically and dynamically stable gaits while stability of locomotion is preserved. RHex is primarily a research platform that is based on over five years of previous research. The purpose of the study is to build a virtual prototype of RHex robot in order to simulate different behavior without manufacturing expensive prototypes. The virtual prototype is modele...
