This study analyzes the process of the diffusion of structures and practices in an organizational setting using the theory of new institutionalism as the theoretical basis. The explanation of the diffusion process has been subject to major variations due to epistemological and ontological reasons. Former theories of organizational reality looked at organizations as their sole units of analyses and accounted for the diffusion process accordingly; however, today, it is widely observed and accepted that organizational behavior is shaped by historical and environmental factors. This investigation aims to provide evidence for how certain structures and practices diffuse through organizational settings while others do not. Consequently, a qualitative design was conducted to explore the diffusion process in the case of the Council of Higher Education, a high-level bureaucratic organization in Turkey. Fifteen key informants, present or former university rectors and members of the Council, were interviewed and the accumulated data were analyzed qualitatively. Also, the findings were matched and supported with relevant documents analyzed additionally. The findings drawn from the investigation indicate that the emergence of the Council implicates a pattern visible throughout the history of Turkish higher education. The Council is spotted as an important agent in redefining Turkish higher education and thus creating a new organizational field for it. Yet, highly dynamic and interactive face of today’s higher education calls for reconsideration of the Council and its functions. A major conclusion that can be reached in this context is that the issue of legitimacy depends on the satisfaction of several demands and expectations at various levels. Therefore, even a formal and regulative organization, such as the Council of Higher Education is prone to the pressures of the organizational field it operates within and is called upon to redefine its structures and implementations accordingly in order to secure its legitimacy.

Effect of case based learning on 10th grade students’ understanding of gas concepts, their attitude and motivation
Yalçınkaya, Eylem; Boz, Yezdan; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2010)
The main purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of case-based instruction based on conceptual change conditions to overcome 10th grade students’ misconceptions related to gas concepts. Moreover, the effect of this method on students’ attitudes toward chemistry and their perceived motivation was explored. The study was carried out during the 2008-2009 academic year at both a state high school and an Anatolian high school. A total of 128 tenth grade students were the participants of the st...
An analysis of the problem-based instruction in engineering education
Ateş, Özlem; Eryılmaz, Ali; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2009)
The main aim of this study was to analyze the implementation of problem-based instruction in electrical-electronics engineering education from the perspectives of tutors and students. Secondary aim of the study was to compare engineering students’ motivation and their use of learning strategies who received their first year curriculum in problem-based learning (PBL) format, in comparison to those who received their curriculum in a conventional lecture format. A multi-method research design that incorporated...
An adaptive fully discontinuous Galerkin level set method for incompressible multiphase flows
KARAKUS, Ali; WARBURTON, Tim; AKSEL, MEHMET HALUK; Sert, Cüneyt (Emerald, 2018-01-01)
Purpose This study aims to focus on the development of a high-order discontinuous Galerkin method for the solution of unsteady, incompressible, multiphase flows with level set interface formulation.
A STUDY OF IMPURITY EFFECT ON ORDERING CHARACTERISTICS OF FE3AL INTERMETALLICS
Mehrabov, Amdulla; Ozturk, T (Elsevier BV, 1994-03-01)
A study is carried out into energetical and structural characteristics of atomic ordering processes in Fe3Al. The statistico-thermodynamical theory of ordering by a quasichemical method is combined with the electronic theory of alloys in pseudopotential approximation in order to predict impurity effects on DO3 double-line arrow pointing left and right B2 phase transition temperature and the characteristics of atomic short-range order in Fe3Al-type intermetallics. Impurity elements in Fe3(Al, Me) Me-Cr, Si, ...
Effects of 7e learning cycle model accompanied with computer animations on understanding of diffusion and osmosis concepts
Bülbül, Yeter; Geban, Ömer; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2010)
The main purpose of the study was to compare the effectiveness of the instruction based on 7E learning cycle model accompanied with computer animations and traditionally designed biology instruction on 9th grade students’ understanding and achievement related to diffusion and osmosis concepts and their attitudes toward biology as a school subject. Quasi experimental design was used in this study. A total number of 66 ninth grade students from four intact classes of a biology course taught by the same biolog...
