S-band hybrid 4 bit phase shifter using cots components

Erkek, Eser
Microwave and millimeter-wave phase shifters are one of the most important structures of the antenna series that are used in communication and radar applications. They are used to form the main beam of the electronically scanned phase array antennas and generate the appropriate phase values for the antenna elements design while providing electronic beam steering. In this thesis, S-band hybrid 4 bit phase shifter of 22.5º phase resolution is designed, simulated, fabricated and measured. Bits are separately designed to maintain low phase errors and return loss. In this manner, fabrication and measurements are performed for each bit. These measurements are carried on since each bit reached to its acceptable level of operation. According to the outcomes and acquired knowledge, layout for optimum cascading of 4 bits is developed. Measurement results are compared with simulations and repeatability is tested to observe if it is convenient to use in mass production. Designs and simulations are performed by using ADS2008®.

The electrical characteristics of antennas in their operational environment
Afacan, Gönenç; Tuncay, Birand; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2007)
This thesis investigates the variations of electrical properties of linear antennas mounted on certain platforms, depending on the physical properties of that platform. In this respect, related basic antenna simulations, electromagnetic simulations from primitive to complex models of airframes, and scale model measurements were used. Firstly, electrical properties of monopoles at known environment were examined and basic analyses were performed via an electromagnetic simulation tool, named CST Microwave Stu...
Tunable frequency microstrip antennas by rf-mems technology
Erdil, Emre; Aydın Çivi, Hatice Özlem; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2005)
This thesis presents the design, fabrication, and measurement of tunable frequency microstrip antennas using RF MEMS (Microelectromechanical Systems) technology. The integration of RF MEMS components with radiators enable to implement tunable systems due to the adjustable characteristics of RF MEMS components. In the frame of this thesis, different types of structures have been investigated and designed. The first structure consists of a microstrip patch antenna which is loaded with a microstrip stub whose ...
Design and implementation of low phase noise phase locked loop based local oscillator
Bölücek, Muhsin Alperen; Yıldırım, Nevzat; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2009)
In this thesis, a low phase noise local oscillator operating at 2210 MHz is designed and implemented to be used in X-Band transmitter of a LEO satellite. Designed local oscillator is a PLL (Phase Locked Loop) based frequency synthesizer which is implemented using discrete commercial components including ultra low noise voltage controlled oscillator and high resolution, low noise fractional-N synthesizer. Operational settings of the synthesizer are done using three wire serial interface of a microcontroller....
Design and realization of broadband instantaneous frequency discriminator
Pamuk, Gökhan; Yıldırım, Nevzat; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2010)
n this thesis, RF sections of a multi tier instantaneous frequency measurement (IFM) receiver which can operate in 2 – 18 GHz frequency band is designed, simulated and partially realized. The designed structure uses one coarse tier, three medium tiers and one fine tier for frequency discrimination. A novel reflective phase shifting technique is developed which enables the design of very wideband phase shifters using stepped cascaded transmission lines. Compared to the classical phase shifters using coupled ...
Modelling and noise analysis of closed-loop capacitive sigma-delta mems accelerometer
Boğa, Biter; Külah, Haluk; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2009)
This thesis presents a detailed SIMULINK model for a conventional capacitive Σ-Δ accelerometer system consisting of a MEMS accelerometer, closed-loop readout electronics, and signal processing units (e.g. decimation filters). By using this model, it is possible to estimate the performance of the full accelerometer system including individual noise components, operation range, open loop sensitivity, scale factor, etc. The developed model has been verified through test results using a capacitive MEMS accelero...
