Deep drawing operations are crucial for metal forming operations and manufacturing. Obtaining a defect free final product with the desired mechanical properties is very important for fulfilling the customer expectations and market competitions. Wrinkling is one of the fatal and most frequent defects that must be prevented. This study focuses on understanding the phenomenon of wrinkling and probable precautions that can be applied. In this study, dynamic – explicit commercial finite element code is used to simulate deep drawing process. The numerical experiments are compared with NUMISHEET benchmarks in order to verify the reliability of the finite element code and analysis parameters. In order to understand plastic wrinkling, the effect of blank holder force is investigated. Axisymmetrical numerical models of a cup are investigated with different blank holder forces. Wrinkling instability is illustrated in energy diagrams of the process. Effect of anisotropy on wrinkling is also discussed by comparing isotropic and anisotropic numerical experiments with the material as steel. Different drawbead models, both equivalent and physical, are implied to the problem and results are discussed. Besides numerical analysis, experimental verification is also conducted as conventional deep drawing operation by a hydraulic press. This yields to the ability to understand the effect of blank thickness on wrinkling formation through numerical and experimental analyses. The wave formations of different sized blanks with four different thicknesses are illustrated.

Finite element analysis and manufacturing of fin connector rod by hot forging process
Şerbetçi, Barbaros; Darendeliler, Haluk; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2009)
Forging operation is one of the most commonly used manufacturing techniques in defense industry. The products of forging operation have higher material strength when comparing to traditional manufacturing operations. Especially, for the mass production, it is a beneficial method considering metal and cost saving. The commonly used part named Fin Connector Rod in defense industry requires high material strength due to working conditions. In this thesis, manufacturing of this part by hot forging operation is ...
Development of postprocessor, simulation and verification software for a five-axis CNC milling machine
Cengiz, Ender; Gökler, Mustafa İlhan; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2005)
Five-axis CNC milling machine tools bring great facility to produce complex workpieces with increased dimensional accuracy and better surface quality in shorter machining times. However, kinematics of five-axis machine tools has a complex form which makes it difficult to operate these machine tools properly. The difficulty arises from the complexity of NC-Code generation and tool path verification. Collision of machine tool or setup components with each other is a severe problem in five-axis machining opera...
Design and analysis of fixturing in assembly of sheet metal components of helicopters
Bayar, Fatih Mehmet; Gökler, Mustafa İlhan; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2007)
Assembling of the compliant parts used in aviation industry is a challenging process. Assembly fixtures are quite important tools in this effort and widely used in industry. In fixturing of easily deformable sheet metal parts, besides restraining the rigid body motion of the parts, the possible deformations that may occur during the assembly process and the spring-back effect on the final product need to be taken in to consideration. In order to guarantee a successful assembling, in other words, to obtain t...
Investigation of wear behavior of aged and non-aged SiC-reinforced AlSi7Mg2 metal matrix composites in dry sliding conditions
ÇELİK, YAHYA HIŞMAN; Demir, Mehmet Emin; KILIÇKAP, EROL; Kalkanlı, Ali (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2020-01-01)
Metal matrix composites (MMCs) with their splendid mechanical properties have been specifically designed for use in fields such as aerospace and aviation. The presence of hard ceramic particles in MMC increases the hardness of the matrix product and decreases its coefficient of friction. Therefore, the wear resistance is improved. Moreover, the mechanical properties of these composite materials can be improved by applying heat treatments. In this study, AlSi7Mg2 MMCs with 15 wt% SiC reinforcement were produ...
On the non-linear vibration and mistuning identification of bladed disks
Yümer , Mehmet Ersin; Özgüven, Hasan Nevzat; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2010)
Forced response analysis of bladed disk assemblies plays a vital role in rotor blade design and has been drawing a great deal of attention both from research community and engine industry for more than half a century. However because of the phenomenon called ‘mistuning’, which destroys the cyclic symmetry of a rotor, there have been several difficulties related to forced response analysis ever since, two of which are addressed in this thesis: efficient non-linear forced response analysis of mistuned bladed ...
