In today’s world, buried structures are used for a variety of purposes in many areas such as transportation, underground depot areas, metro stations and water transportation. The serviceability of these structures is crucial in many cases following an earthquake; that is, the earthquake should not impose such damage leading to the loss of serviceability of the structure. The seismic design methodology utilized for these structures differs in many ways from the above ground structures. The most commonly utilized approach in dynamic analysis of underground structures is to neglect the inertial forces of the substructures since these forces are relatively insignificant contrary to the case of surface structures. In seismic design of these underground structures, different approaches are utilized like free-field deformation approach and soil-structure interaction approach. Within the confines of this thesis, seismic response of highway tunnels is considered through a case study on Bolu Tunnels, which are well documented and subjected to Düzce earthquake. In the analyses, the seismic response of a section of the Bolu tunnels is examined with 2-D finite element models and results are compared with the recorded data to evaluate the capability of the available analysis methods. In general, the results of analyses did not show any distinct difference from the recorded data regarding the seismic performance of the analyzed section and that the liner capacities were sufficient, which is consistent with the post earthquake condition of the Bolu Tunnels.

Hydraulic characteristics of tyrolean weirs
Yılmaz, Nazlı Aslıcan; Göğüş, Mustafa; Department of Civil Engineering (2010)
Tyrolean type water-intake structures are widely used on mountain rivers to provide water to hydropower stations. The main concern encountered in these kinds of structures is the amount of water diverted from the main channel and sediment carried by this flow. The diverted flow should not be less than the design discharge of the hydropower station and the amount of the sediment entering the hydraulic system should be minimum. In this study a physical model of a Tyrolean weir was constructed at the Hydromech...
Comparison Of Structural Responses for a Base Isolated Building Under Real and Simulated Records
Ozsarac, Volkan; Karim Zadeh Naghshineh, Shaghayegh; Askan, Ayşegül (null; 2019-06-01)
In recent decades, base isolation systems for buildings are commonly used as retrofitting strategy in earthquake-prone areas. Evaluation of structural responses for base-isolated systems subjected to severe earthquakes is challenging since some regions have scattered ground motion dataset. Simulated ground motions can be an alternative to overcome this issue. There are several ground motion simulation methods available that provide varying levels of goodness fit between observed and synthetic data; therefor...
EVALUATION OF DYNAMIC SOIL PRESSURES ACTING ON RIGID CULVERTS: SHAKING-TABLE TESTS
ÜLGEN, DENİZ; Özkan, M. Yener (2016-01-01)
The seismic safety of underground structures (culvert, subway, natural-gas and water-sewage systems) plays a major role in sustainable public safety and urban development. Very few experimental data are currently available and there is no generally accepted procedure to estimate the dynamic pressures acting on these underground structures. This study aims to enhance the state of the prevalent information necessary to understand the dynamic behaviour of box culverts and the stresses acting under dynamic exci...
Systemic seismic vulnerability and risk analysis for buildings, lifeline networks and infrastructures safety gain (SYNER-G)
Yakut, Ahmet(2013)
SYNER-G is research project which has the following main goals: (1) To elaborate appropriate, in the European context, fragility relationships for the vulnerability analysis and loss estimation of all elements at risk, for buildings, building aggregates, utility networks (water, waste water, energy, gas), transportation systems (road, railways, harbors) as well as complex medical care facilities (hospitals) and fire-fighting systems. (2) To develop social and economic vulnerability relationships for quantif...
Development of a new methodology for path optimization of underground mine haul roads using evolutionary algorithms
Yardımcı, Ahmet Güneş; Karpuz, Celal; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2018)
The main haul road serves as an access route for men, equipment, transportation of extracted ore and ventilation air in underground mines. Initial capital investment and operating cost parameters are affected by the haul road path. However, the most common method to design a main haul road is to rely on the provisions of skilled mine design experts. Contrary to the simple underground mine layouts, determination of the optimum path without violating navigability constraints in complex underground networks ma...
