In this thesis a custom embedded system and control software developed for an Automated Storage and Retrieval System (AS/RS) which is based on the Computer Integrated Manufacturing Laboratory (CIMLAB) located in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Middle East Technical University. Primary objective of this study is AS/RSs related control rules can be applicable to the current physical system. The secondary objective is determined as developing the control system in a flexible way that allows adding new equipments to the system and configuring parts of the system. Two types of control board are manufactured and also boards’ firmware and computer software are developed. These two boards communicate with computer one at a time. Some AS/RS related control rules are implemented at the control software. According to these rules the control software assigns tasks to the related board. Also the control software records necessary information in order to measure the performance of the AS/RS. Several control rules as storage assignment, dwell point and sequencing of storage and retrieval order rules are applicable to the AS/RS without need for low level programming. Because of the physical limitation, batching rules cannot be applied to the current system. Also a graphical user interface is developed for using the system easily and observing the real time status of the system equipments. Two experiments are designed and run in order to show flexibility of the control system. Different control rules applied to each of the experiment. Experiment results put forth the control system was quite successful in meeting the objectives.

Development and characterization of low-cost uncooled infrared sensors for commercial applications
Tankut, Firat; Akın, Tayfun; Eminoğlu, Selim; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2013)
This thesis reports the study on the development and characterization of low-cost uncooled microbolometer type infrared detectors, which are fabricated using standard CMOS and MEMS processes. Characterization of the detectors is the first step of developing infrared sensors with better performance. The characterized pixel has a 70 μm pitch and includes 4 serially connected diodes as the detector circuit. Thermal conductance (Gth), temperature sensitivity (TC) and, optical absorption are measured in scope of...
A New Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulator for CNC Machine Applications
USENMEZ, S.; MUTLU, B. R.; Yaman, Ulaş; KILIÇ, ERGİN; Dölen, Melik; Koku, Ahmet Buğra (2013-03-01)
This study focuses on an integrated software and hardware platform that is capable of performing (real-time/nonreal- time) hardware-in-the-loop simulation of dynamic systems, including electrical machinery, CNC machine tools. In this approach, once the dynamics of the plant to be controlled is defined via C++ language, the resulting code is cross-compiled automatically on a PC. Executable files along with the necessary drivers are downloaded onto the composite hardware platform that consists of a Field Prog...
Investigation of warpage behavior of single crystal silicon on a silicon Adhesive ceramic integrated structure at cryogenic temperatures
Baloğlu, Can; Okutucu Özyurt, Hanife Tuba; Dursunkaya, Zafer (2016-03-17)
Understanding thermal stress and warpage behavior of heterogeneous component assemblies is vital in infrared sensor applications of silicon semiconductor material. The silicon semiconductor warpage behavior of the integrated structure composed of silicon material itself, an adhesive layer and a ceramic layer is analyzed by both FEM and experimental studies. The studies are performed between room temperature and 80 K. Thickness of each layer has an effect on the warpage. The silicon warpage of the initial ba...
Evaluation of compression algorithms for motion command generation
Yaman, Ulaş; Dölen, Melik (2011-04-15)
This paper focuses on a direct command generation technique for Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine systems. In this paradigm, higher-order differences of a given trajectory (i.e, position) are computed and the resulting data are compacted via data compression techniques. As a part of the command generation scheme, the paper also introduces a new data compression technique titled ΔY10. Apart from this new method, the performances of the proposed generator employing different compression algorithms (suc...
Modular embedded system design / implementation for mechatronic education and research
Nursal, Ali Özgü; Koku, Ahmet Buğra; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2007)
In this thesis a modular embedded system for Mechatronics education and research is designed and implemented. Four types of control boards are manufactured and related software is developed at board and PC level. A star like topology is used for boards architecture. One bridge board is responsible for handling communication between the PC and all the other boards that are connected independently to that bridge board. For PC communication Universal Seial Bus (USB), for inter peripheral communication serial p...
