In this study, numerical modeling of landslide generated tsunami waves in closed basins and their mechanisms are presented. Historical landslide generated tsunamis are investigated and also the governing parameters affecting impulse wave parameters are studied. The numerical model is based on the solution of nonlinear form of the long wave equations with respect to related initial and boundary conditions. In order to validate the outputs of the modeling by NAMIDANCE, empirical formulation is applied to the same cases as the numerical model and the results are discussed. The numerical model is then applied to Pervari Dam artificial reservoir as a case study to investigate the effects of potential landslide into the reservoir. The outputs of the numerical model are compared with empirical formulation results for different approaches of modeling the landslide effect in water body. The critical sections are observed for overtopping and maximum wave amplitude values and the results are discussed.

Tsunami hydrodynamics in coastal zones
Özer, Ceren; Yalçıner, Ahmet Cevdet; Department of Civil Engineering (2012)
This study analyzes the parameter “hydrodynamic demand” that is also defined by the square of Froude Number representing the damage of tsunami waves on structures and coastlines, and other hydrodynamic parameters, i.e., the distribution of instantaneous flow depths, runup values and the direction of maximum currents, occurred during tsunami inundation by using advanced numerical modeling. The analyses are performed on regular-shaped basins with different bottom slopes and real-shaped topographies using diff...
Two-dimensional depth-averaged beach evolution modelling
Baykal, Cüneyt; Ergin, Ayşen; Department of Civil Engineering (2012)
In this study, a two-dimensional depth-averaged beach evolution numerical model is developed to study the medium and long term nearshore sea bottom evolution due to non-cohesive sediment transport under the action of wind waves only over the arbitrary land and sea topographies around existing coastal structures and formations. The developed beach evolution numerical model is composed of four sub-models: a nearshore spectral wave transformation model based on energy balance equation including random wave bre...
Assessment of flood hazards due to overtopping and piping in Dalaman Akköprü Dam, employing both shallow water flow and diffusive wave equations
Yilmaz, Kutay; Darama, Yakup; Oruc, Yunus; Melek, Abiddin Berhan (2023-01-01)
This study was carried out to determine flood propagation using shallow water equations (SWEs) and diffusive wave equations (DWEs) to reveal how the flood modeling results differ in terms of flow depth, flow velocity, and hazard level. The solution methods were tested based on the hypothetical failure of the Dalaman Akköprü Dam resulting from two failure mechanisms: overtopping (OT) and piping (PP). A 2D hydraulic model was constructed using HEC-RAS to determine the propagation of flood waves due to the fai...
Study of wave impact loads on components of stilling wave basin on a vertical seawall
Altunbaş, Mustafa Gökay; Özyurt Tarakcıoğlu, Gülizar; Kısacık, Doğan; Department of Civil Engineering (2022-8-24)
In this study, the wave pressure on components of Stilling Wave Basin (SWB) is investigated by analyzing the physical model experiment data of wave pressures for various hydrodynamic conditions. SWB is a structure that can be used for optimizing the crest height to achieve lower overtopping conditions especially in urban areas. The experiments are based on assessing the performance of SWB on a vertical seawall for which limited research exists. Wave pressure data on the seaward storm walls (both rows) and t...
Local site characterization and seismic zonation study by utilizing active and passive surface wave methods: A case study for the northern side of Ankara, Turkey
Eker, Arif Mert; Akgün, Haluk; Kockar, Mustafa Kerem (2012-11-29)
This study encompasses dynamic soil characterization and site classification zonation mapping of the Plio-Quaternary and especially Quaternary alluvial sediments based on the current seismic codes. The study area is located in the Cubuk district and its surrounding area that is situated towards the north of Ankara, the capital of Turkey. The project site is located in a region which has the potential of being seriously affected by probable seismic events occurring along the Cubuk Fault Zone. The Cubuk Fault...
