Ferrite circulators are crucial elements for T/R modules of RADAR systems. Unlike many other mature devices, ferrite circulators have not been replaced by IC devices and have been used in T/R modules since 60s because of two main reasons. Firstly, they do not require environmental elements like capacitors or inductors unlike IC devices. Secondly, their performance is superior in terms of insertion loss, matching and isolation. Basically, they are used for the aim of the discrimination of the incoming and outgoing signals of a single antenna. Thus, the design of wideband circulators is an important issue for the frequency band of RADAR systems. In this thesis, it is aimed to give the details of the design, simulation, fabrication and measurement procedure of a one octave and a more than one octave circulator. Firstly, a one octave circulator is designed by using continuous tracking technique. Then, the designed circulator is fabricated and observed that it performs an insertion loss of 1dB and an isolation and a return loss of better than 13 dB in the frequency band of 8.75-18.75 GHz. In the following part of the thesis, a more than one octave circulator is designed, fabricated and measured to prove that it is possible to achieve wider band circulator applications by using composite substrates. Moreover, measurement results show that an insertion loss of 1 dB and an isolation and a return loss of better than 13 dB have been achieved in the frequency band of 7.7-18.7 GHz.

We report the characterization, calibration and performance of a custom-built hybrid detector consisting of BC501A liquid scintillator and BC702 scintillator for the detection of fast and thermal neutrons, respectively. Pulse Shape Discrimination techniques are developed to distinguish events due to gamma-rays, fast and thermal neutrons. Software analysis packages are developed to derive raw neutron energy spectra from measured proton recoil spectra. The validity is demonstrated through the reconstruction o...
Design of magneto-electric dipole antenna for wideband communication systems
Alparslan, Semih; Alatan, Lale; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2018)
This thesis includes the design, simulation, production and measurement of a differential fed magneto-electric dipole antenna with cavity operating at ultrawideband (3.3 GHz – 10 GHz). This antenna consists of a differential feeding structure, an electric dipole, a magnetic dipole and a cavity. The ultra-wideband operation is achieved through the use of differential feeding structure and cavity. A step-by-step procedure is followed during the design process of the differential fed magneto-electric dipole an...
Design and analysis of antennas mounted on cylinders for avionics applications
Özcan, Mustafa; Aydın Çivi, Hatice Özlem; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2015)
Conformal antenna structures are widely used in airframes because of not disturbing the aerodynamic characteristics. In this study, stripline fed conformal slot antennas of rectangular and rounded bow-tie shaped geometries, and coplanar patch antennas are designed to comply with the design requirements of a telemetry application in the frequency band of 2225-2275 MHz. Furthermore, parametric studies are carried out for some crucial design parameters in order to understand the relation between the antenna ph...
FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS OF PLANETARY GEAR SET FOR WIND TURBINES
Koçlar, Yaşar Çağatay; ESAT, VOLKAN; Mechanical Engineering (2023-1-26)
Planetary gear sets are utilized in various critical applications. Being one of these applications, investigation of wind turbine systems is essential to improve sub-systems such as planetary gearbox, yaw gear, and pitch system under different conditions. In this study, a new finite element model is proposed for obtaining the transient load on the gears of a planetary gearset, and examining the failure types. As an improvement, determination of critical loading scenario for gearset, modeling the blades as a...
Modeling and synthesis of circular-sectoral arrays of log-periodic antennas using multilevel fast multipole algorithm and genetic algorithms
Ergül, Özgür Salih (American Geophysical Union (AGU), 2007-06-19)
Circular-sectoral arrays of log-periodic (LP) antennas are presented for frequency-independent operation and beam-steering capability. Specifically, nonplanar trapezoidal tooth LP antennas are considered in a circular array configuration, where closely spaced antennas occupy a sector of the circle. Electromagnetic interactions of the array elements, each of which is a complicated LP antenna structure, are rigorously computed with the multilevel fast multipole algorithm (MLFMA). Genetic algorithms (GAs) are ...
