Fabrication and a complete structural, optical and electrical analysis of porous germanium nanostructures embedded in a dielectric matrix: possibility of third generation solar cell applications

Altuntaş, Burcu
The primary goal of this thesis is to synthesize porous Ge nanostructures embedded in a dielectric matrix and perform a complete structural, optical and electrical characterization. Ge nanostructures can be a good candidate for use in third-generation solar cells, since they are alternative to Si nanostructures owing to their potentially higher photon conversion efficiencies. So far, most of the research is focused on the use of quantum dot structures in photovoltaic applications; although they provide quantum confinement of excitons, their drawback is the difficulties in electrical connection, which relies on tunneling probability through the dielectric matrix. As an alternative, we propose fabrication of porous Ge nanostructures embedded in a dielectric matrix via magnetron-sputtering technique, which is an interconnected Ge nanocrystal network where the electrical connection does not require any tunneling mechanism. We also suggest a way to preserve the quantum confinement effectby carefully tailoring the Ge content and engineering the structure of dielectric matrix.

Design and implementation of coupled inductor Cuk converter operating in continuous conduction mode
Ayhan, Mustafa Tufan; Ersak, Aydın; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2011)
The study involves the following stages: First, coupled-inductor and integrated magnetic structure used in Cuk converter circuit topologies are analyzed and the necessary information about these elements in circuit design is gathered. Also, benefits of using these magnetic elements are presented. Secondly; steady-state model, dynamic model and transfer functions of coupled-inductor Cuk converter topology are obtained via state-space averaging method. Third stage deals with determining the design criteria to...
Modelling and experimental study of titanosilicate ets-10 : application for solar cells
Koç, Mehmet; Akata Kurç, Burcu; Toffoli, Hande; Department of Micro and Nanotechnology (2013)
Density functional theory (DFT) calculations within the gradient-corrected approximation (GGA) have been carried out on three models of ETS-10 with the aim to elucidate the effect of ion exchange on the structural, electronic and vibrational properties of the Ti-O-Ti quantum wire. Our data are reveal the presence of two inequivalent Ti-O bonds along the chain in the ETS-10 sodium form, in agreement with past theoretical and experimental studies. The nature and spectral position of the ligand-to-metal charge...
Characterization of GZO thin films fabricated by RF magnetron sputtering method and electrical properties of In/GZO/Si/Al diode
Surucu, O. Bayrakli (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2019-11-01)
The main focus of this work is the structural and optical characterization of Ga-doped ZnO (GZO) thin film and determination of the device behavior of In/GZO/Si/Al diode. GZO thin films were deposited by RF magnetron sputtering technique from single target. The structural and morphological properties of GZO film were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman scattering, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis (EDS) measurements. Optical properties of the fil...
Structural characterization of intrinsic a-Si:H thin films for silicon heterojunction solar cells
Pehlivan, O.; Yilmaz, O.; Kodolbas, A. O.; Duygulu, O.; Tomak, Mehmet (2013-01-01)
We have utilized ex-situ spectroscopic ellipsometry and HRTEM to characterize the optical and structural properties of intrinsic a-Si:H thin layer that plays a key role for the improvement of the open circuit voltage in silicon heterojunction solar cells. Intrinsic a-Si:H films were deposited on (100) p-type CZ silicon wafers by using Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD) technique at 225 degrees C substrate temperature and deposition time ranges from 15 s to 1800 s. Observed changes in the imag...
Preparation and thermal characterization of poly(2-vinylpyridine) copolymers coordinated to Cr nanoparticles
Öztürk, Yurdagül; Kayran, Ceyhan; Hacaloğlu, Jale (2015-06-01)
In this study, polystyrene-block-poly(2-vinylpyridine), PS-b-P2VP, polyisoprene-block-poly(2-vinylpyridne), PI-b-P2VP and poly(methyl metacrylate)-block-poly(2-vinylpyridine), PMMA-b-P2VP, coordinated to Cr metal were synthesized and characterized by Fourier transform infrared, transmission electron microscopy and direct pyrolysis mass spectrometry techniques. Both thermal degradation mechanism and thermal stability of P2VP blocks were affected by the coordination of Cr nanoparticles to nitrogen of pyridine...
