Aerospace structures are designed to be light-weight to obtain high performance. Reduction in weight makes the structure flexible and lower frequency modes can be easily excited. Moreover those modes have low damping and vibrations do not attenuate immediately. Passive systems are effective to control the vibrations but they can be heavy and most of the time they do not respond to changing environment conditions. An active system is necessary for low-weight adaptive vibration reduction system. Modal Space Control is used for large flexible aerospace structures due to the advantage of reducing the complexity of control system. In this study a generalized formulation of modal space control is proposed for three dimensions where each node is modeled with six degrees of freedom.

Numerical investigations of lateral jets for missile aerodynamics
Ağsarlıoğlu, Ekin; Albayrak, Kahraman; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2011)
In this thesis, effects of sonic lateral jets on aerodynamics of missiles and missilelike geometries are investigated numerically by commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software FLUENT. The study consists of two parts. In the first part, two generic missile-like geometries with lateral jets, of which experimental data are available in literature, are analyzed by the software for validation studies. As the result of this study, experimental data and CFD results are in good agreement with each other...
DYNAMIC MODELING AND CONTROL OF AN ELECTROMECHANICAL CONTROL ACTUATION SYSTEM
Yerlikaya, Umit; Balkan, Raif Tuna (2017-10-13)
Electromechanical actuators are widely used in miscellaneous applications in engineering such as aircrafts, missiles, etc. due to their momentary overdrive capability, long-term storability, and low quiescent power/low maintenance characteristics. This work focuses on electromechanical control actuation systems (CAS) that are composed of a brushless direct current motor, ball screw, and lever mechanism. In this type of CAS, nonlinearity and asymmetry occur due to the lever mechanism itself, saturation limit...

Chen, Yong; Ulker, Fatma Demet; Nalbantoglu, Volkan; Wickramasinghe, Viresh; Zimcik, David; Yaman, Yavuz (2009-11-01)
Following the program to lest a hybrid actuation system for high-agility aircraft buffeting load alleviation oil the full-scale F/A-18 vertical fin structure, an investigation has been performed to understand the aerodynamic effects of high-speed vortical flows on the dynamic characteristics of vertical fin structures. Extensive wind-tunnel tests have been conducted on a scaled model fill integrated with piezoelectric actuators and accelerometers to measure file aft-tip vibration responses under various fre...
Computational Investigation of the 3-D effects on Dynamic Fracture of Curved Composite Laminates
Tamer Tahir, Ata; Çöker, Demirkan (2018-09-07)
Composite materials are used more and more in aerospace, commercial and industrial applications due to high specific stiffness, strength and damage tolerance capability. The main advantage of composite materials, it allows the stiffness and strength of the material to change with direction of loading. Hence tailoring structıres to meet load requirements reduces weight and allows designer to optimize structure. Considering all these advantages, primary and secondary structural elements of recent commercial a...
Adaptive control of guided missiles
Tiryaki Kutluay, Kadriye; Yavrucuk, İlkay; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2011)
This thesis presents applications and an analysis of various adaptive control augmentation schemes to various baseline flight control systems of an air to ground guided missile. The missile model used in this research has aerodynamic control surfaces on its tail section. The missile is desired to make skid to turn maneuvers by following acceleration commands in the pitch and yaw axis, and by keeping zero roll attitude. First, a linear quadratic regulator baseline autopilot is designed for the control of the...
