On output independence and complementariness in rank-based multiple classifier decision systems
Saranlı, Afşar (Elsevier BV, 2001-12-01)
This study presents a theoretical analysis of output independence and complementariness between classifiers in a rank-based multiple classifier decision system in the context of the partitioned observation space theory. To enable such an analysis, an information theoretic interpretation of a rank-based multiple classifier system is developed and basic concepts from information theory are applied to develop measures for output independence and complementariness. It is shown that output independence of classi...
On the retrial and redial phenomena in GSM networks
Onur, Ertan; Ersoy, C; Caglayan, MU (2000-01-01)
GSM operators work with call data that include retrials and redials as well. Based on these inflated, virtual call attempt statistics, it appears that enormous demands are put on the available spectrum. In this paper, we develop simple models to estimate the expected number of retrials and redials per original call attempt, which is used to determine the effective load and the number of traffic channels required to meet the grade of service. It is shown that significantly fewer channels are capable of handl...
On the concept of "field" in architectural theory and practice
Kuzlu, Emre; Aközer, Emel; Department of Architecture (2004)
This study aims at explaining the significance of the أfieldؤ concept in contemporary architecture and urbanism, in reference to the technical definitions of the term in different disciplines. In this context, it investigates the concepts of أfieldؤ in physics, psychology, art theory and criticism. It highlights the reinterpretation of the أfieldؤ concept in physics by eminent Gestalt psychologists, and its consequences for architecture and urbanism. Starting from the definitions of the concept of أfieldؤ b...
On critique of architectural image : reading Jean Baudrillard through Jean Nouvel
Uslu, İrem; Sargın, Güven Arif; Department of Architecture (2011)
The aim of this study is to question the relationality between conception of image, social condition of an era and architecture. With acceptance of a transition to a new kind of relationality in contemporary era, a trialectical analysis is carried on, in order to understand changes in this relationality and its effects on contemporary architecture. Image, mainly depicted as the tool for communication, loses its transcendental and ideal status and degrades to an artificial and tricky state under the contempo...
On the use of genetic algorithms in structural optimization
Erbatur, F; Hasançebi, Oğuzhan (1997-09-05)
This paper is concerned with the use of genetic algorithms (GAs) in size optimum design of planar and space structures made of I-D elements. GAs have proved to be very promising and solid search and optimization techniques. They are particularly very suitable in discrete structural optimization problems. The fundamental points of integrating a GA with structural optimization are discussed. This is followed by a brief explanation of computer implementation and illustrative examples.
