Development of a conceptual design tool and calculation of stability and control derivatives for mini UAV systems

Yazırlı, Sena
The main objective of this thesis is to write a design tool that will perform the conceptual design phase of an aircraft and achieve the desired specifications of the design. For this purpose, a code is written in MATLAB so that the designer does not have to change or check parameter values when a modification on the mission altitude, cruise conditions, airfoil type, propulsion system units, weight or general geometry of the aircraft. Most of the available design tools are created for large aircraft and not for uninhabited air vehicles. Besides they are mostly focused on a single branch of the aircraft design such as airfoil design, wing design, structural design, performance analysis etc. Whereas in this thesis, it is aimed to combine all these branches of the aircraft design and come up with a conceptual design tool for mini class uninhabited air vehicles manufactured from composite materials and powered by electrical motor. The code calculates the parameters for the general geometry, lift and drag forces, pitching moment, performance characteristics, composite structure weight, stability and control derivatives, state space matrices with their eigenvalues of longitudinal and lateral dimensions. In principle, the user enters the input parameters needed and rest of the computations are done automatically. Five critical input parameters are determined by the user according to the design features. These parameters are computed by the tool and in return the user gets the optimum values for the determined objective parameters of the aircraft within the given intervals and constraints. As a results, a user-friendly conceptual design tool that generates the whole information about the aircraft from its geometry to its stability and control derivatives is devised. The thesis gives an example of the conceptual design of a mini UAV system performed using the design tool given in the thesis to verify the design tool.

Design and manufacturing of a high speed, jet powered target drone
Özyetiş, Ender; Alemdaroğlu, Hüseyin Nafiz; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2013)
This thesis presents the design and manufacturing of a high speed jet powered UAV which is capable of flying at M=0.5. Flight time of the UAV is 30 minutes at 1700 m above sea level. Aerodynamic and structural design of the UAV is conducted for 6g sustained and 9g instantaneous loads. Low aspect ratio blended wing-body design is decided due to low drag and high maneuverability. The Structure of the UAV consists of the composite parts such as frames and skin and mechanical parts such as landing gears which a...
Design and manufacturing of a solar powered unmanned air vehicle
Özcan, Servet Güçlü; Alemdaroğlu, Hüseyin Nafiz; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2015)
The aim of this thesis is to describe the conceptual design, performance analysis including solar energy collection and manufacturing process of a solar powered unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and validate the design through ground and flight tests. Through a literature survey of solar powered aircraft, main design requirements are chosen. The solar powered UAV designed for this study is a small scale aircraft and intended to be used simply and frequently by end-users. Therefore it is designed as a flying win...
Kundes, Necmettin Anil; Aksel, Mehmet Haluk; Baran, Özgür Uğraş (2019-01-01)
This paper presents a new design and analysis tool that is developed to be employed during the design process of axial flow compressors. The tool chain implemented by this design tool consists of five parts: a mean-line design tool, followed by a blade geometry parametrization tool. Then 3D blade geometry is created, next a high quality structured mesh is generated and completed by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) solution. All components employed in the new tool are either new developments, or achieved b...
Design of a medium range tactical UAV and improvement of its performance by using winglets
Turanoğuz, Eren; Alemdaroğlu, Hüseyin Nafiz; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2014)
The study encompasses the design, performance analysis and aerodynamic improvement of the designed medium range tactical unmanned aerial vehicle. Main requirements are set as following; cruising altitute above 3500m, endurance of approximately 10-12 hours, range of 150 km and payload of 60 kg. The conventional design phase is based on the employment of historical equations and experiences. Nowadays, employement of well known equations and experiences during the desing process are not enough to reveal a comp...
Proposal and evaluation of a KBE-RM selection system
Munguia, Javier; Bernard, Alain; Erdal Erdoğmuş, Merve (Emerald, 2011-01-01)
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to propose and evaluate a novel tool for the assessment and selection of rapid prototyping (RP)/manufacturing (RM) systems as alternative processes for low-volume production in the machinery and equipment design sector. By analysing previous RP/RM selectors, this research addresses the necessary factors that a knowledge-based engineering (KBE) system must include for the analysis, comparison and ranking of candidate technologies.
