The objective of this study is to perform probabilistic seismic hazard assessment (PSHA) using planar seismic source characterization models for East Anatolian Fault Zone (EAFZ) and to update the design ground motions to be used in the region. Development of planar seismic source models requires the definition of source geometry in terms of fault length, fault width, fault plane angles and segmentation points for each segment and associating the observed seismicity with defined fault systems. This complicated task was performed with the help of Updated Active Fault Maps of Turkey (Emre et al., 2012), previously conducted geological site studies in the literature, and Unified Instrumental Earthquake Catalogue of Turkey (Kalafat et al., 2011). The state-of-the-art seismotectonic model developed in this study includes the fault segments, rupture sources, rupture scenarios, and fault rupture models that are combined with composite magnitude distribution model to properly represent thecharacteristic behavior of faults. This study is also novel in terms of the employed ground motion characterization framework. Recently published global Next Generation Attenuation (NGA-West2) ground motion prediction models (Bozorgnia et al., 2014) and Turkey-Adjusted NGA-West1 models (Gülerce et al., 2015) are used in the ground motion logic tree with equal weights. The results are presented in terms of the hazard curves and deaggregation of the hazard for six selected locations (Bingöl, Elazığ, Kahramanmaraş, Osmaniye, Pütürge, and Hasanbeyli) and compared with the Turkish Earthquake Code (TEC, 2007) requirements. Seismic hazard maps for accepted hazard levels in TEC (2007) for different spectral periods and forgeneric rock (VS30=760 m/s and VS30=1100 m/s) site conditions are also provided. Results of this study will provide an update of the previous seismic hazard maps of EAFZ and design ground motions proposed for the region.

Probabilistic seismic hazard assessment of Eastern Marmara and evaluation of Turkish Earthquake Code requirements
Ocak, Recai Soner; Gülerce, Zeynep; Department of Civil Engineering (2011)
The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the seismic hazard in the Eastern Marmara Region using improved seismic source models and enhanced ground motion prediction models by probabilistic approach. Geometry of the fault zones (length, width, dip angle, segmentation points etc.) is determined by the help of available fault maps and traced source lines on the satellite images. State of the art rupture model proposed by USGS Working Group in 2002 is applied to the source system. Composite reoccurren...
Probabilistic methods for estimating the seismic deformations of underground structures
Soyman, Kadir Buğra; Gülerce, Zeynep; Department of Civil Engineering (2018)
In seismic design of underground structures, simplified semi-deterministic methods based on the stiffness of the soil and the underground structure are used to estimate the seismic deformations. Generally, peak ground acceleration (PGA) value for different hazard levels are provided by the probabilistic seismic hazard assessment (PSHA) analysis, but a single (and deterministic) PGA value is employed in deformation calculations. The objective of this study is to propose a fully probabilistic framework for es...
Probabilistic seismic hazard assessment for earthquake induced landslides
Balal, Onur; Gülerce, Zeynep; Department of Civil Engineering (2013)
Earthquake-induced slope instability is one of the major sources of earthquake hazards in near fault regions. Simplified tools, such as Newmark’s Sliding Block (NSB) Analysis are widely used to represent the stability of a slope under earthquake shaking. The outcome of this analogy is the slope displacement where larger displacement values indicate higher seismic slope instability risk. Recent studies in the literature propose empirical models between the slope displacement and single or multiple ground mot...
Derivation of site-specific UHS based on simulated ground motions and its parametric effects on building fragility
Azari Sisi, Aida; Askan Gündoğan, Ayşegül; Department of Civil Engineering (2016)
Estimation of seismic demands is essential for the purpose of structural seismic design and analyses. It is significant to obtain reliable ground motion amplitudes to estimate seismic damage on structures in a realistic manner. The ground motion simulation methodologies provide a physical approach to estimate seismic demands in the regions with sparse recording data and scarce networks. This dissertation consists of two main parts: In the first part, site-specific uniform hazard spectrum (UHS) of Erzincan r...
Influence of seismic source and ground motion modeling on the probabilistic seismic hazard assessment of the city of Van after the 23 october 2011 mw7.2 earthquake
Şenyurt, Mehtap; Akkar, Sinan; Yılmaz, Mustafa Tolga; Department of Civil Engineering (2013)
Reliable assessment of seismic hazard is the most important step for seismic design and performance assessment of structural systems. However, the inherent uncertainty in earthquakes as well as modeling of ground motion may affect the hazard computed for a particular region. This study investigates the influence of seismic source and ground motion modeling on probabilistic seismic hazard assessment (PSHA). The study considers the seismicity around the city of Van to achieve its objective as this city was hi...
