The purpose of the this study was to investigate the effectiveness of context-based instruction as compared to the traditional instruction on 10th grade high school students’ understanding of fossil fuels and clean energy resources topics and their attitudes toward environment. The effect of school type was also investigated. A quasi-experimental pre-test-post-test control group research design was used for that purpose. A total number of 113 10th grade students of two different types of high schools were the participants of the study. Experimental group students were instructed with context-based instruction whereas control group students were instructed with traditional instruction through six weeks. Fossil Fuels and Clean Energy Resources Achievement Test and Attitude toward Environment Scale were used as pre-tests and post-tests in the experimental and control groups. Student Questionnaire about Context Based Instruction was used as a post-test in the experimental group. Furthermore, Science Process Skills Test was used as a pre-test in both groups. In statistical analysis MANCOVA was conducted and the main effects of treatments, school types, and their interaction effects were investigated. The results showed that in comparison to the traditional instruction, the context-based instruction was superior on students’ achievement and attitudes toward environment. The interaction effects between treatment and school type were significant for attitudes toward environment but not significant for achievement. A significant school type difference was not found.

Effectiveness of context based approach through 5E learning cycle model on students' understanding of chemical reactions and energy concepts and their motivation to learn chemistry
Çiğdemoğlu, Ceyhan; Geban, Ömer; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2012)
The aim of study was to investigate the effect of context-based approach (CBA) through 5E learning cycle (LC) model over traditional instruction on students’ understanding, achievement, and chemical literacy on chemical reactions and energy concepts. The effect of instruction on students’ motivation to learn chemistry and the factors of motivation questionnaire were also explored. Additionally, the effect of gender difference was investigated. Six eleventh grade classes with 187 students taught by three tea...
The effect of context based instruction on 9th grade students' understanding of cleaning materials topic and their attitude toward environment
Elmas, Rıdvan; Geban, Ömer; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2012)
The purpose of the present study was to compare the effectiveness of context based instruction over traditionally designed chemistry instruction on 9th grade students’ understanding of cleaning materials topic and their attitudes toward environment. Moreover students’ science process skills were measured for using as a covariate. Participants were 222 ninth grade students from eight classes in two different types of high schools in Ankara. Experimental group students were instructed with context based instr...
Effectiveness of case-based learning instruction on pre-service teachers' chemistry motivation and attitudes toward chemistry
ÇAM, AYLİN; Geban, Ömer (2017-03-01)
Background: The development of primary pre-service teachers' chemistry motivation and attitudes toward chemistry were examined in order to develop their science literacy using case-based learning. Students' ideas were emphasized, real-life situations were discussed, and students could share their ideas and knowledge with peers; as a result, students were active in the learning process.Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of using case-based learning instruction to increase ...
Effect of structuring cooperative learning based on conceptual change approach on students' understanding of the concepts of mixtures and their motivation
Belge Can, Hatice; Boz, Yezdan; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2013)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of structuring cooperative learning based on conceptual change approach on grade nine students’ understanding the concepts of mixtures and their motivation, compared to traditional instruction. Mixtures Concept Test (MCT), self-efficacy for learning and performance, task value, control of learning beliefs, and test anxiety sub-scales of Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ), and mastery approach goals, mastery avoidance goals, performan...
Effectiveness of instruction based on constructivist approach on students understanding of chemical bonding concepts
Uzuntiryaki, Esen; Geban, Ömer (2004-09-01)
The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of instruction based on constructivist approach on ninth-grade students' understanding of chemical bonding concepts and their attitudes toward chemistry as a school subject. The contribution of students' science process skills to their understanding was also investigated and gender differences in terms of understanding chemical bond- ing concepts and attitudes toward chemistry as a school subject were examined. Forty-two ninth-grade students f...
