The aim of this thesis is to shed light to the tendencies of change in the intellectual life of Iran with the framework of the development of a religious intellectual’s ideas, who is Abdolkarim Soroush. In this context, the focal point of this thesis will be to show that Iran has a potential to be changed and to be freed from her Islamic nature in time. In other words, this thesis aims to show that Iran has the tendency to change its Islamic character. For this purpose, this thesis also provides a comparison of the intellectual life in Iran before and after the revolution. Abdolkarim Soroush was a ‘unique’ intellectual’ in Iranian context since he had the ability to construct his ideas different from the other intellectual figures in Iran. This thesis benefited from the ideas of some important intellectuals of Iran; who were Ali Shari‘ati, Mehdi Bazargan, and Murtaza Mutahhari, and also it benefited from the concept of ‘Liberal Islam’, which had defined by Abdolkarim Soroush to show his uniqueness. Under the shed light of all of these points, throughout this thesis, the development of the political thought in Iran (starting from the beginning of 20th century) will be evaluated within the framework of Abdolkarim Soroush’s political and religious ideas. Related to this target, also the effect of the Islamic revolution in the development of Abdolkarim Soroush’s ideas will be explained.

Sütalan, Zeynep; Tür Küçükkaya, Özlem; Department of International Relations (2015)
This thesis analyzes the Egyptian-Israeli and Jordanian-Israeli peace processes in terms of peace-making, the nature of the peace treaties, and peace-sustaining from the Arab perspective. These peace processes have not gone much further than ‘cold peace’ dashing the hopes for a ‘real peace’ in the region. This thesis argues that the ‘cold peace’ phenomenon evident in the cases of Egyptian-Israeli and Jordanian-Israeli peace processes is the reflection of the autonomy of the state since the authoritarian sta...

Dilan , Ayverdi; Recep , Boztemur; Department of Middle East Studies (2021-10-12)
This thesis aims to analyze the failure of political Islam in not responding to the social demands of the Iranian people with the established system after the revolution. The Islamic regime claimed to create a democratic constitution with the Islamic rule (Sharia) and an equal economic system that prioritizes the oppressed people (mustazafin) and responds to society's real expectations, which the Pahlavi monarchy had not responded. However, eliminating revolutionary forces like the socialists, nationalists,...

Geopolitics and the study of international relations
Gökmen, Semra Ranâ; Polat, Necati; Department of International Relations (2010)
This study seeks to examine the main theories and theorists of geopolitical imagining and argue for an intrinsic relation between traditional geopolitics and the development of international relations both in theory and practice. By doing so the study aims to pursue an assessment of the insights of critical geopolitics, as reflected in the works of John Agnew, Geraróid Ó Tuathail (Gerard Toal), Simon Dalby, Klaus Dodds and others, for the theory of IR, more specifically its dominant paradigm realism. The ai...
