Selection of appropriate machine and equipment is one of the most critical tasks required in surface mining. Since draglines are massive and expensive machines, their selection is of paramount concern to mining engineers and decision makers. The selection of appropriate dragline model requires simultaneous consideration of various parameters, such as geological properties of overburden material, stripping method, available fund and technology. Therefore, this is a complex and time-consuming process. In this study, the dragline selection process was reviewed and a computer- aided selection program, Draglayout, was developed to increase the efficiency in the selection process. The developed software suggests list of the commercially available dragline units based on its maximum suspended load and reach factor which are compatible to achieve the given stripping and production targets. The selection process consists of four main stages as: i. Initial estimations of dragline operation parameters (availability, dragline utilization, dragline operating hours, cycle time, ore production, ore recovery, etc.), ii. Defining initial mine design geometry, iii. Available equipment geometry and mine design relations, iv. Reviewing the above steps and selecting the dragline. Developed Draglayout software is an easy and useable tool for selecting dragline equipment. Draglayout provides mining engineers and decision makers with an efficient and easy way to select the most appropriate dragline for the required stripping targets.

Risk assessment by fault tree analysis of methane explosions in Turkish hard coal enterprises underground mines
Mevsim, Rıdvan; Demirel, Nuray; Department of Mining Engineering (2016)
Mining is one of the most hazardous industries in the world. Among all mining professions, underground coal mining has the highest occupational accident and disease rates. Methane explosion appears as the major accident type which results in severe loss of life and property in underground coal mining. Including underground coal mines, preparing a practicable risk assessment is the primary step to sustain a safe workplace environment. The main objective of this study is to specify the root causes of methane ...
Reliability-based maintenance optimization of walking draglines
Gölbaşı, Onur; Demirel, Nuray; Department of Mining Engineering (2015)
Dragline is an earthmover extensively utilized in open cast coal mines for overburden stripping activities. Since the machinery breakdowns may induce high amount of production losses, draglines are required to be operated with high availability. In this sense, effective maintenance policies are essential to improve longevity of dragline component and sustainability of operations. In this research study, it is aimed to develop a reliability-based maintenance optimization models for two walking draglines, Pag...
Monitoring and statistical modelling of dust concentration of some Turkish lignites under laboratory conditions
Karakaş, Ahmet; Güyagüler, Tevfik; Department of Mining Engineering (2010)
Although technological developments enable maximum safety, high dust formation is still a crucial problem in coal mining sector. This study is aimed to investigate the relationship between amount of coal dust produced during cutting operation and some important coal properties together with cutting parameters for different particle size ranges in laboratory conditions. For this purpose, six Turkish lignite samples were used in the experiments. Two experiment sets were designed to generate coal dust by using...
Reliability analysis for two draglines in Tunçbilek lignite mine
Tuncay, Deniz; Demirel, Nuray; Department of Mining Engineering (2014)
In modern mining activities, high-capacity complex machines are used and their availability plays a big role on the mine productivity. Draglines are one of the high capacity mining machines which result in decrease in production in case of failure or unavailability. This study aims to determine the effects of different components of two draglines (PAGE 736 and MARION 7820) to their availability and operability by choosing adequate reliability models and conducting fault tree analyses. Reliability analysis w...
