Since the last decade, environmentally friendly asphalt production techniques have significantly advanced for savings in natural resources, energy and economy. From these techniques, Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) provides a reduction in mixing and compaction temperatures and also overcomes various challenges of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA). Additionally, Crumb rubber (CR) modification of asphalt mixtures helps the disposal of waste tires and also improves the asphalt mixtures properties. Among CR modification methods, dry process (Dry) method has various advantages. Thus, the focus of the study is to overcome the major disadvantages of Dry CR (i.e. high production temperatures) with WMA additive. In this study, the association of WMA and dry process are studied for the first time through a broad laboratory study. Therefore, seven different asphalt mixtures including HMA, dry process CR modified HMA (DryHMA) and five sets of dry process CR modified WMA (DryWMA) are prepared to analyze the compactibility, volumetrics, and low-temperature performance properties of these mixtures. DryWMA mixes are prepared by changing various design parameters (i.e. WMA additive dosage, conditioning time, compaction and mixing temperatures). The results of this study stated that the decrease in the mixing temperatures could not be compensated by extending the conditioning time. However, the compaction temperature could be considerably lowered without compromising the low-temperature performance and strength of the mixes. In addition, use of the WMA additive with the dry CR modified mixtures provides better compactibility and workability. Moreover, the decreases in the cooling rate of DryWMA provides longer compaction frame.

Environmentally friendly techniques for asphalt mixtures are developed for greater savings in natural resources, energy and economy. This paper focuses on the association of: i) Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) ii) Dry Process Crumb Rubber (DryCR). WMA is a widely used technology that allows significant reduction in the mixing temperature (MT) and compaction temperature (CT) of the asphalt mixtures. Additionally, they have various acknowledged engineering, environmental and economic benefits. Similarly, CR modificati...
Effect of warm mix additives on compactabilitiy of mixtures
Pamuk, Ömer Can; Öztürk, Hande Işık; Department of Civil Engineering (2019)
Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA), the technology that allows significant reduction in the mixing and compaction temperatures of asphalt mixtures, has been commonly used globally since the early 2000s. This study evaluates the effect of compaction temperature (CT) on WMA and Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) mixtures volumetrics, degradation, stability, and compactability properties. Although both Superpave Gyratory Compactor (SPGC) and Marshall hammer are used for sample preparation, the focus of this study is to develop compact...
Investigation of alkaline pretreatment parameters on amulti-product basis for the co-production of glucose and hemicellulose based films from corn cobs
Toraman, Hilal Ezgi; Bakır Bölükbaşı, Ufuk; Özkan, Necati; Department of Chemical Engineering (2012)
There is an increasing trend in the world for using renewable sources of fuels and chemicals due to the continuous depletion of fossil fuel reserves besides the environmental issues related with the exploitation of these resources. Lignocellulosic biomass is seen as the most promising candidate to be used instead of fossil sources because of its availability, relatively low price and less competition with food and feed crops. In this study, corn cobs, a lignocellulosic agricultural waste, were subjected to ...

As a result of rapid depletion of non-renewable energy resources, the importance of the e efficient utilization of renewable energy sources has increased all over the world and in our country in recent years. Wind has an important role in renewable energy sources with its high potential. However, compared to other renewable energy sources, wind has a spatial and temporal discontinuity characteristic so there is a need for estimating and planning of wind power generation. Wind Power Plants (WPPs) inform thei...
Near-Optimal Design of Scalable Energy Harvester for Underwater Pipeline Monitoring Applications With Consideration of Impact to Pipeline Performance
Qureshi, Fassahat Ullah; Muhtaroglu, Ali; Tuncay, Kağan (2017-04-01)
Underwater pipelines are often necessary to transport valuable resources between patches of land, and are expected to have increased utilization across the globe with the steep population increase on one hand, and unbalanced depletion of resources on the other. It is desirable to automate monitoring of various performance parameters associated with the pipelines through wireless sensor networks to ensure longevity of use and reduced running costs. However, such pipelines are not easily accessible, and are s...
