This study explores the norm localization dynamics and processes in order to better understand how international norms diffuse and take root in diverse local socio-cultural contexts. While the mainstream norm scholarship in International Relations has extensively studied the diffusion dynamics at the international and state levels, it has neglected the distinct dynamics of local contexts and the agency of local norm entrepreneurs in norm diffusion. However, localization is vital for norm diffusion because the creation of new norms and the states’ socialization are necessary but not sufficient for norm internalization and practice at the local level. For successful norm diffusion, international norms must resonate at the local level. Focusing on the diffusion of women’s human rights norms, this study investigates the norm localization in the context of combating violence against women. Utilizing data derived from the in-depth-interviews, participant observation and fieldwork, this study investigates the norm localization in two socio-culturally distinct localities (i.e. Trabzon and Antakya) in Turkey. Findings reveal that localizers are key to successful norm diffusion. Norm localizers appropriate the international norms and then act as active intermediaries between the global, national and local levels. Moreover, localization is not an automatic or smooth process, but a conflictual one. Rather than being passive receivers of international norms, localizers reinterpret and translate norms to make them more resonant, understandable and effectively usable in their particular localities. They target strategic local groups as objects of norm diffusion, and develop several tactics in translating abstract international norms into the local context and practice.

Understanding the localization of international norms: women’s human rights norms in Turkey
Özdemir Sarıgil, Burcu; Şenyuva, Özgehan; Department of International Relations (2018)

Evaluation of discrete ordinates method for radiative transfer in rectangular furnaces
Selçuk, Nevin (1997-01-01)
The discrete ordinates method (DOM) and discrete transfer method (DTM) were evaluated from the viewpoints of both predictive accuracy and computational economy by comparing their predictions with exact solutions available from a box-shaped enclosure problem with steep temperature gradients. Comparative testing shows that the S-4 approximation produces better accuracy in radiative energy source term than in flux density in three orders of magnitude less CPU time than that required by the DTM. The S-4 approxi...
FORCED VIBRATIONS OF TRIPLY COUPLED, PERIODICALLY AND ELASTICALLY SUPPORTED, FINITE, OPEN-SECTION CHANNELS
Yaman, Yavuz (Elsevier BV, 2002-2)
An exact analytical method is presented for the analysis of forced vibrations of uniform, open-section, single- and multi-bay periodic channels. The centre of gravity and the shear centre of the channel cross-sections do not coincide, and hence the flexural vibrations in two mutually perpendicular directions and the torsional vibrations are all coupled. The ends of the channels and the periodic intermediate supports are modelled with springs having finite flexural and torsional stiffnesses. Single-point for...
EFL speaking anxiety : how do students and teachers perceive it?
Saltan, Feyza; Enginarlar, Hüsnü; Department of English Language Education (2003)
This thesis aims to investigate the causes of speaking anxiety experienced by Turkish EFL students in language classrooms from the perspectives of both learners and teachers. For this purpose, 100 intermediate level EFL students and their class teachers (7 in total) in the Prep School at Gazi University were chosen as the subjects. For this study, data were collected by administering two different versions of the same questionnaire to the two groups of subjects. Then, the data collected from each of the gro...
Analysis of the Problem Based Learning Implementations Students and Tutors Perceptions and Actions
Ateş, Özlem; Eryılmaz, Ali (2015-03-01)
This study aims to analyze the implementation of problem-based learning (PBL) in engineering education regarding perceptions and actions of tutors and students. A case study design was employed in this study. To this end, four tutors, their five PBL modules, and fourteen students were selected. Observations and interviews were used to collect qualitative data. The results indicated that there was a difference between participants’ perception of PBL and their actions during tutorials. Participants’ level of ...
